Hugely overrated.
Marisa Tomei was cute in it, otherwise the film stinks.
Nah.
shareYah brah.
Nuh-uh.
shareSorry dude but I can't keep up with this witty repartee.
Sorry was I lowering the bar for your eloquent and articulate OP? You got one thing right though, Marisa Tomei was cute in the movie.
shareThis film is about two boys who are wrongly arrested for a murder in Alabama. Their cousin Vinny (Pesci), who has been a lawyer for six weeks, arrives with his girlfriend Mona (Tomei), to defend them.
Everything about this film, except Tomei who is cute, is tired and obvious. The gags aren’t funny and you can see them coming from a mile away. The so called twists and turns in the court case are equally obvious and stale.
Is that better ?
Are you asking for my approval of your opinion?
shareNo I'm not. I was responding to your " Sorry was I lowering the bar for your eloquent and articulate OP? " line by providing more detail for my low opinion of the film.
Congrats on your more eloquent and articulate update.
That is much better .
You are still completely wrong though. The film is awesome . Everyone says that.
Its an older movie, yet still has a 7.6 rating. That alone speaks volumes to me. Even a movie that is a masterpiece sits at an 8.2.
My Cousin Vinny is regarded as a good movie by most people.
i thought it was lame, but some weird people think this is a good movie...
shareI found it charming and funny. The kind of wholesome upbeat character driven comedy you just don’t see now.
^ I agree with this.
Fred and Marisa stole the movie, but I felt Joe did a great job.
Funny lines throughout …a very solid comedy.
Anyone bashing this movie has a terrible sense of humor.
Eh, I'd rather see Chris Farley running around screaming about bees. That's my type of humor!
shareI love it and think it's hysterical. Even after seeing it many times over the years, I laugh just as hard throughout the movie as I did the first time I saw it.
Disagree, this is a funny movie. I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10. I saw it sometime in the 90s and it was a refreshing break from the onslaught of Jim Carrey movies.
The only thing I didn't like about it was the overuse of the word "fuck" in it. Every other line has someone dropping an F-bomb. Not sure why the writer/director thought this was a good idea, MCV is not a remake of Scarface.
Beyond that, it's a very solid movie.
This came out before Jim Carrey really had any sort of comedy movie run, unless you saw this on video a few years after it was released? I didn't really notice the swearing, though, I'm sure you're not wrong. This is a cool flick and I've watched it many times. Not as many times as I've watched Ace Ventura though lol.
shareIt was after the JC movies.
I'm exaggerating a little on the cussing but yeah, they used that word quite a bit in this movie. Which I found a little odd since there was no actual reason to use it.
Ace Ventura is a good movie. JC was in some pretty good comedies back in the day, but I think I will always consider The Mask to be his best movie, or at least his best comedy. He made some other more serious movies that were good though like The Truman Show and The Majestic. He was really good as Andy Kaufman in that movie Man On The Moon. That might actually be his best overall movie.
But I'm sure most people consider Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind to be his best.
I find the first ace best, but I am only but one man. The majestic and the Truman show are nice in that order. Man on the moon I remember as a hoot, very much enjoyable. Sunshine I'm yet to see, I know, I can't believe it either, kill me just.
shareHonestly, I wasn't that impressed with Sunshine, it was decent but a little on the pretentious side for a JC film.
shareI'm sure I'll watch it one day, but that is honestly what I was afraid of. Same reason I haven't watched Adaptation, with nic cage.
shareNaaahh... I do recommend Adaptation. That's a great film, very funny stuff. But it is more on the drama side rather than comedy. I really liked it.
I can't say I recommend ESOTSM though. But a lot of people did like it. I'd probably have to watch it again to make a final conclusion on it. But it did seem like it was trying to be bigger and badder than what it actually is. I mean, just the title 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' is pretentious as fuck. lol...
I agree that the title makes the film less accessible. I have no idea why I haven't watched Adaptation yet. Nic is pretty much my favourite. I've seen nearly all his films, tonnes of "shit";ones, liked nearly all of them.
shareI avoided it for the longest time because of the title and the premise, it ended up being more than just some...pretentious indie flick. But someone suggested I watch it so I was like eh. Fine.
I was taken. Eternal Sunshine is fantastic. It's not pretentious at all. It's a beautifully shot film; great practical effects, cinematography. It's an emotional film about a really...complicated relationship (and perhaps they all are). I don't even really think of it as a Jim Carrey movie; it has a strong cast of supporting characters that are all pivotal to the plot and point of the movie.
Highly recommend for sure.
I love The Mask too! It's on my annual rotation. Liar Liar also has good rewatch value, i think. I liked the Truman Show but it doesn't spark my interest on rewatch the way that The Mask does.
I didn't much like Eternal Sunshine but it seems to be the one that's talked about the most.
I didn't like LL as much as the other JC films listed above but it had some funny parts.
I'll have to watch Eternal Sunshine again. It's been a long time since I've seen it. I just remember not caring for it that much but it could be an acquired taste I suppose. Many people didn't like it the first time they saw it but liked it a lot more upon repeated viewings.
I thought it was hilarious
