Why did Apollo Creed lose to Ivan Drago so easily?

Is it plausible in real life that a former world champion could lose so quickly to an amateur?

reply

They were pushing the steroids angle in the film, plus Apollo was past his prime and underestimated him. Today it would be racist to show that fight.

reply

Apollo was old and did not train sufficiently.

reply

Watch Ben Askren versus Jake Paul, and you will understand.

reply

Drago was young and full of juice. And much taller, twice as strong, quicker, faster.

Apollo was retired and well past his prime.

But in this age, it would be best to remake this film and have Drago be a black man. And Apollo white.

reply

Apollo approached the whole thing as a show which is what it was supposed to be anyway. He was outmatched completely and too old. In the real world Drago would have killed Rocky too.

reply

Rocky beating Drago was a plot hole. Drago should have destroyed him

reply

Yep especially Rocky's "strategy" allowing his opponent to beat the shit out of him in order to wear them down! I'll be generous and say 3 punches from Drago would have killed him.

reply

Seem to remember he did the same thing in Rocky III against Clubber Lang! Rocky and Apollo had a pretty sound game plan of blitzing Lang over about six rounds - then Rocky suddenly decides to throw it all out the window and let this 'wrecking machine' (as I think Micky called him) punch him in the head repeatedly!

reply

That seems to be his strategy in all the movies.

I believe this was due to a real life injury Stallone sustained. I can't remember which talk show he was on when he was discussing it, but I think he injured his right shoulder or something? I think he talked about having to switch to southpaw and some of the choreography changing due to the injury. Or was it when he tore his pectoral muscle?

Either way, yeah the fight choreography had to change due to the injury. I think he may have talked about it on the Conan O'Brien show? I would have to go back and look for it.

reply

Okay, that's interesting.

reply

Can't seem to find the interview, it may have been on Carson? He seemed to talk about the film there but I haven't had time to re-watch all of Stallone's Carson interviews.

Anyway, it wasn't the pectoral muscle tear, that happened during Rocky II.

I remember him talking about his diet being dangerous for Rocky III but I can't seem to find the interview where he talks about having to switch stances.

reply

Drago killed his brain but he couldnt kill his heart. Once Rocky got up for more, he got the crowd behind him .It demoralized Drago. Everyone turned on him except his wife.

reply

He himself didn't have the eye of the tiger. I'm not sure he ever did in the entire series.

reply

He was always the showman more than the boxer I agree.

reply

He might have had it in part 2

reply

That's one I need to rewatch. I can see how you're right, seeing as how he wanted the rematch.

reply

I remember him getting really worked up during his training, but I guess Mick had a strategy and Rocky had more motivation than ever to make it.

reply

Gotta be a plot hole

reply

AND YOU GOTTA BE A DICK HOLE.🙂

reply

He was t-o-o-o-o-o o-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-d!!!

reply

He lost in order to further the plot, to set up the fight between Drago and Rocky.
