What happened to them? Where have they been in the past decades?
They were great!
I hated them as a kid, they were cringeworthy, out of place, exploitative.
They were ubiquitus in movies that had little to do with love or sex, like action or horror flicks.
In reality they added an extra element to the experience, making it more human and mature, and also more female friendly and maybe more juvenile. I guess American puritanism prevailed, so idiotic moms feel safer now that their kid watches 2 hours of shooting but God forbid he takes a glance of a pair of tits for 2 seconds. It's been a bigot virtuewashing for the worse.
I miss them, enough neutered cartoons for dickless boys, Hollywood bring em back!
Can chalk it up to a confluence of factors such as the increasing rise of conservative puritanism since the 80's (not exclusive to one side of politics) and Hollywood having infantilsed moviemaking with safe, generic, good versus evil superhero fare that upholds "traditional values".
Hollywood is now more or less a corporate kids factory while cable has taken up the mantle for adult material.
Looking back at when the Terminator was made; it was a time of pre-AIDS sex, and a time when dark urban action flicks and slasher films were popular - of which the Terminator contains heavy elements of both.
Yes I have the same opinion, the unavoidable remake will feature all the same dark elements but just a silly "romantic" moment between Sarah and Kyle then fade to black with them kissing, at the riskyest.
Don't you think it's time to go back to the sex scenes in movies to add more mature elements to the story?
They removed them even from romantic movies now!
Imagine an Officer and a Gentleman without them, what a lousy flick that would be...
Oh hell yeah, but I imagine Hollywood sees it as too risky in light of re-newed conservative campaigns against pornography; they see a safer buck in keeping their material generic and safe. That is completely wrong considering controversy most often courts attention and profits, yet Hollywood is still too skittish and they seem happy with their safe blockbusters making enough money.
Hollywood is in desperate need of a 1960's-70's renaissance, but I don't think that will happen again or at least not for a long time. The nature of the industry is much more corporatised than it was in the 60's while blockbuster moviemaking still turns in comfortable profits. There's also the lack of liberal changes to cultural and social norms that helped inspire the Hollywood Renaissance.
But then again I could be wrong and change comes rapidly.
Great comment.
I doubt you are wrong, unfrtunately.
The maximum controversy you can get from hollywood nowadays is sophomoric outings like Deadpool. Otherwise, it's super low budget.
Everything big is disney in contents and intentions. How exciting...
I am not sure what conservative campaigns you are referring to, atleast in the US, there's nothing I've heard of. I think the a sweet is simply $$$$ - if they can get a lower rating it increases your market. If you look at all the hoopla with R rated movies such as Deadpool, John Wick and Logan - studios are coming slowly around slowly that R rated flicks can make decent money.
There has been an increasingly heightened controversy regarding Internet pornography, and along with the fall-out from the Me Too movement it seems to have revitalised Hollywood reluctance to engage in more adult materia: being fearful of accusations of exploitation.
There of course is your point also about needing a reach a broader market - which these days is seen to be males with pre-teen superhero fantaises. But I do hope those titles you mention signal a changing tread.
Ace, all of that porn censorship is coming from the Left, along with the #MeToo movement. Look at all the retard celebrities pushing and celebrating that nonsense, it's all Lefties and their Liberal Progressive feminist cult members.
The attack on sexualizing women in media is a Cultural Marxist movement. It's gone way across the board to movies, video games and even comic books!
If you look at what's actually happening, the Right came up with #ComicsGate to start funding their own independent comic books because all the mainstream comic book companies have gone full degenerate with their Liberal Progressive agendas.
#ComicsGate brought back the sexy, with good looking females, plenty of raunch, and masculine men (just check out some of the stuff from Ed Benes and few other indie comic artists being funded via IndieGoGo and Kickstarter).
Meanwhile, the Left are pushing for disgusting freaks with characters like Safe Space, and that hideous fat lesbian that's supposed to be Starfire's child.
You guys are right that all the sexy-time is definitely being censored and removed, but usually only if it involves hot heterosexual couples. You'll find plenty of gay and lesbian romances thrown around on television and in movies (like Person of Interest's only major sex scene was a lesbian sex scene to push the Left's agenda for the Rainbow Reich).
But otherwise it's all been tamed down. Video games is the real travesty here, there hasn't been any hot sexualized females in Western-made games since 2015's The Witcher 3. All newer games feature gross looking hambeasts, lesbians, and those man-jawed abominations with the body of a deflated linebacker.
You must be on crack to think that in contrast, conservatives and the Christian Right champion sexuality on screen and porn. You also missed the conservatives pushing for Internet porn restrictions and the use of personal ID to access porn.
There's plenty of heterosexual sex on cable.
It's your loss if you find real people less attractive than unrealistically proportioned, fantasy superhero women with nipples that could take an eye out.
You must be on crack to think that in contrast, conservatives and the Christian Right champion sexuality on screen and porn.
No one said the Christian Right did champion sex and porn.
It's your loss if you find real people less attractive than unrealistically proportioned, fantasy superhero women with nipples that could take an eye out.
LOL this is something I would expect a Leftist to say. People love idealized aesthetics, it was championed in the 80s and part of the 90s. It's why people fondly think back on media from that era and nothing so fondly from the [current year], filled with hideous land-whales, Twitter-sensitive casting choices, and lots of Liberal-Progressive degeneracy.
"LiBeRaL DeGeNeracy"...
I'm imagining some Kyle Rittenhouse like sludge sitting in his mother's basement, mouth covered in potato chip crumbs, his pasty face lit by the glow of his computer screen while typing some Parler post about "too many fatties on TV"...
The R is always about cursing a lot and violence. Very rarely, or never, a big budget movie gets r rated for sex.
Not to mention, does a sex scene like in Terminator or Top Gun get that rating?
I don't remember when Terminator was filmed or released (I know it's released 1984) but Eddie Murphy's "Delirious" was 1983 when he had the bit about AIDS killing you, and what next? you stick your dick in and it explodes?
I think AIDS was a cover story for TIME or Newsweek or maybe all the rags in 1983... scared the shit out of me, and I was still trying just to get to third base...
I always find it fascinating that American culture has no problem with graphic murder and violence but showing anything sexual or even a boob is a step too far. So weird.
Of course not, children would have no interest in such a film. French films are higher rated if they contain a lot of violence, American films seem higher rated based on nudity/sex.
The sex scene in this film (I believe I was 9 when I first viewed it at Donnie & Bobby's house) remains my favorite film sex scene of all time. The music, the lighting, the tender eroticism, the length (kinda wanted more, but then again it's just right) Linda Hamilton...I think it's outstanding.
You think there's less nudity in movies now???!!!! LOL
Even if that were true, which I doubt, you can find plenty of nudity on tv now which wasn't the case in the 80's. And there's also this little innovation called the internet too fill your need for titties.
I wouldnt say this films sex scene was a "80s mandatory sex scene" , becasue Sarah having a baby was central to the plot.
What other mainstream films had one?
not counting romance films.
The only one that springs to mind for me is fat old seagull leering all over lovley Kelly le Brock in "Hard to kill"
ooh and that one on the train in "Dreamscape" , possibly kim cattrall?
It's a little late to reply but I don't get how the sex scenes in the Specialist and Conan the Barbarian are central to the plot. If they didn't have them it would not really change the plot that much.
Personally I think the idea of being central to plot can be largely subjective. Both the lovemaking scenes in the Specialist & Conan conveys the mood, the intimacy & deepening bond between the characters - although the former also sought to titillate & was clearly inspired by direct-to-video erotic thrillers of the era. And I don't find anything wrong with that either.
The sex between Conan and the Witch was the *ahem* price he had to pay for Thusla Doom's location. Although she seemed to be some sort of Mantis like creature who was going to devour him anyway after climaxing - so they had to show all that lol.
Now thinking of it, the only time I was upset by a sex scene was back in 2006 when I was in highschool and read flowers for Algernan. Then we watched a movie of it where they had a sex scene between Charlie Gordon and his nurse. That was unnecessary and pointless.
ah , true
all those teens in the woods getting cut up.
probly why they arnt springing to mind , was never really into slashers, or horror
now i think about it wasnt there some incest in one of the Amityville films?
I liked nudity and sex scenes (not really that there had to be a sex scene I just wanted the actress naked....she could have just been walking around for all I cared) but when I was a teenager.
I utterly loath them now and I don't even respect actresses that are willing to do them.
Here is the thought process I had at each age....as a teen and now as a married dad with a wife and daughter.
As a teen....I just wanted to see some hot girls naked. That is it. Director....find any reason to get the actress naked...I don't care...just get her naked....I want to see it....my eyes enjoy it. I would get mad if they teased nudity but didn't have it. We follow a girl into the bathroom, she is prepping the shower. We see her standing there....we see her whole body. She starts undressing...we get to watch....she is down to her bra and panties....I cannot wait. She unhooks her bra suddenly the camera zooms in just showing her face....then she grabs her underwear....the camera zooms in to watch the article of clothing go down her legs to her feet and she steps out of them but then right back to a closeup of her face....or her stomach. I was like....why did you show all that just to cut away when she is nude. I wanted to see it.
Now I'm older. I have a wife, a daughter. Now I look at it from a "real world" perspective. I think....what if that if my wife or girlfriend or daughter. I think...what if my wife were an actress...she left our home to go travel and film on location for a month, she is touching, kissing and doing sex scenes with some guy....the director has thought up all of these stupid, idiotic scenes that ask her to be naked for everyone to see....for her to be recorded nude for eternity on screen. I'd hate it. What if that were my daughter. I now see it that most of these women do not want to do that....they are pressured into it to get the work. To be successful for to get better roles and parts....you have to go nude. If you do not, your career may suffer.
I think, what kind of world is this where a woman has to go nude and simulate sex, kiss, roll around in bed, let a man grab her butt or touch her breasts.....to have an acting job? That is sick. The movie industry is full of exploiters and perverts. I know the truth....this isn't NEEDED to have a good film or a popular film. You can have a romantic film and not actually have to SHOW them acting out sex. Hell, one of the most popular films of all time "Gone with the Wind"....they didn't act out sex. Rhett took Scarlett up the steps and carried her into the bedroom and the door shut. We do not always have to watch the female actress undress....she doesn't need to be shown showering. Acting has gotten sick. You have to do soft porn to be an actress? Ridiculous.
Congratulations, you've evolved as a human being! T1 would've been better without the cheesy sex scene. It's the one thing that prevented T1 from being a masterpiece. T2 is the only Terminator movie that is a true masterpiece.
You do know that sex scene is completely important to the entire plot of TERMINATOR, right? Did you understand the film, and what was happening to all the characters in their timeline? It was a story/plot requirement, not just a cheesy sex scene.
These movies were made before the "PG-13" rating was introduced. Ever since then, movies have been watered down to get that rating for a potential larger audience.
That could explain it, but my personal take, on a movie like this one, is:
fuck them kids and fuck them bigots, this is a movie for grown ups, not mickey mouse.
PG-13 was just becoming a thing in 1984, and at one time it was pretty useful for those films that weren't quite PG but probably didn't deserve an R. I swear it made sense at once, but yeah, now it's become a device to water down what should be an R film for exactly the reason you gave. I think "The Terminator", even without that great love scene, is R material all the way.
Terminator was made during the age where Hollywood was being hit with the "ultra-violence" labels, so even without the sex scene there was no way it was getting anything less than R. It had plenty of gratuitous squibbing, mutilation, and gore... I mean, a guy got a hole punched through his chest and his heart ripped out as if it were Mortal Kombat... and that happens just minutes into the film.
I thought the sex scene was well done and fit the whole pace but I do hate sex scenes with no relevance whatsoever other than just to have one.
I remember watching an interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger about the making of Predator. The writers included a sex scene between him and that woman they took hostage. He argued against it saying "I'm in the hot jungle watching this alien massacre my friends, sex is the last thing on my mind."
Lol, he made perfect sense to me and I'm glad they listened to him π
I don't think he's ever done one. I know he had some kissing scenes in True Lies, Raw Deal and Twins but nothing close to a sex scene. I thought he would finally have one with Jamie lee Curtis in True Lies after her strip tease.
I have always found him very attractive and sexy but I'm not so sure about his "O" face... π
Remember during that scene when she was pushing him away and trying to leave and he pulled her to him by her leg? My hubby does that to me and I love it! Lmao!!
