Why cast such an ugly wife?

Roy Scheider was a pretty good looking guy. It makes no sense

reply

Not that I ever thought of her as ugly, but these days they'd refer to her as 'attainable'.

reply

IIRC she was a studio executive's wife. So... connections.

reply

She was Sid Sheinberg's wife, the guy who ran Universal which produced the Jaws franchise. He was credited with discovering Spielberg, and was also friends with him. She did a good job in all the Jaws films, regardless of whether she got the part through nepotism.

reply

No question... I'm just answering how she got the role. One of the best parts of the first two movies was the chemistry between her and Brody. So glad they didn't go the book route and have her and Hooper have an affair.

reply

Well said, 100% agree. They gave Lorraine a bigger part in Jaws 2 thanks to her performance in the first. She also had good chemistry with Michael Caine in the fourth movie, which was one of the few worthwhile things in it. Good actress.

The book was an entertaining read but had some weird shit in it. Spielberg did well to throw Peter Benchley off the set when he objected to the ending. Spielberg's ending was a 1000 times better than the book.

reply

She was no where near ugly. She made Ellen Brody warm and likable. If Bree Larson played that part she'd have stunk out the movie.

reply

Brie Larson is a great actress, certainly several levels above Lorraine Gary. She'd have made this movie better. Deal with it.

reply

How would Brie Larson have made JAWS Better out of curiosity?? Ellen Brody was barely seen in JAWS much less it's sequel JAWS 2?? Is it just because you like Brie Larson and you had to end the argument in a dick measuring sort of way??

reply

Brie Larson is a far better actress, therefor she'd do better than Lorraine Gary. It's that simple. Brie's performances in works like Room and Lessons in Chemistry were superb. She didn't win an academy award for nothing.

Tam87 is acting like Brie Larson in place of Lorraine Gary would have made the movie worse, which makes no sense and is just some bitter rambling for no good reason. Why even bring Brie Larson up?

Of course I'm gonna whack-a-mole when some muppet is talking nonsense.

reply

Brie wasn’t born yet.

But if she had been an adult it would have been a mistake casting her.

The audience would have been focused on her hotness rather than anything else.

Also:

Brie Larsen - 1 Best Actress Oscar so far
Lorraine Gary - 0

Brie Larsen - 75 roles so far
Lorraine Gary - 33 roles total

reply

I just think Brie Larson is a lousy, unlikable actress, which precedes any hotness she might possess. I'd imagine if she was acting in 1975 and cast in Jaws, she'd ruin it. I just used her as an example to show how good a performance Lorraine Gary gave in the movie.

As a heterosexual man I'm probably not the best to judge a man's looks but I personally don't think Roy Scheider was that good looking, I'd say Lorraine Gary was on his level. A believable couple.

reply

He was handsome. You can recognize an attractive guy (I know I am) without being gay.

And yes, they were great together.

reply

I think Roy's appeal is he's an 'every man'. He looks more like a gym teacher than an A list celeb.

reply

“A believable couple”

Exactly. I’d actually go a bit further and say that part of the appeal of the movie is that the entire cast is quite believable. Everything fits.

reply

Absolutely.

reply

To make her look like an actual NY woman.

reply

WHY POST SUCH SILLY NONSENSE?

reply

WHY REPLY TO IT?

reply

CHASING SHOGUN FOR TOP SLOT.😉

reply

That seems pretty irrelevant to the movie.

reply

IT IS...BUT MY ORIGINAL COMMENT WAS RELEVENT TO THE SILL ASS POST I RESPONDED TO...SO...NO PUDDING OUTTA YOUR MOUTH😉

reply

Lorraine Gary was plenty attractive enough….(except for that ridiculous wedge hairdo in Jaws: The Revenge).

It looked like the helmet of a samurai warrior.

reply

Maybe that’s what she was playing. 😳

reply

Good question.

This is off the top of my head.

I believe the actress that played his wife - Lorraine Gary - had a big time, important husband.

It's possible she was hired as a favor to her hubby.

Although, one doesn't know this for sure.

reply

She wasn't ugly, she looked cute enough
