The ONLY thing Chris did wrong...

...was not come up with a better line after the slap. I’m sure he was a bit stunned, but a great line after the slap could have been the stuff of legend. I mean...David Niven legendary. (Google it you nimrods)

reply

leave it to the Brits

reply

Though what could be the line? It can't involve his wife again, and it can't be provocative. That is hard to come up with.

reply

"Okay. . .now she's *gotta* play the next G.I. Jane. Then She can come gimme a *real* slap. . ."

reply

Brilliant.

reply

“Keep my wife out of your mouth, Will? Isn’t that what happens in an open marriage?”

That.....would have been legendary.

reply

Well, the both jokes involving his wife again. Then he was asking for it.

reply

yeah but if he'd already recieved "it" , that buys some leeway?
1 slap buys 2 or 3 jabs at wife? :)

reply

If he were causing problems on purpose, then his career as a host would have been over. None wants someone trying to make a bad situation worse to host any ceremony or show.

Also if he did that then nobody would be sympathetic of him being slapped or even hit again afterwards, like I said he was asking for it.

reply

That would’ve been fucking hilarious!

reply

What's the first thing I'm gonna see when I look in the mirror? Fresh prints.

reply

Subtle, but maybe too subtle to work.

reply

How about

“That’s the worst reaction to a joke I’ve seen since the reviews for After Earth”

reply

That is not bad and totally acceptable for the occasion.

reply

Not bad. Not bad.

reply

Good one

reply

Rock should have come back with: "Hey Smith. The jerk store called. They're running out of you."

reply

That is a tacky cheap shot, not worthy of him.

reply

George Costanza disagrees with you.

reply

Yeah, he should have gone with "Yeah, well I had sex with your wife..."

reply

I am sorry, but the jokes of these kinds are out of anger, and just not clever enough for a professional comedian I am afraid.

reply

You're probably right.

It sounds more like something some short, stocky, slow-witted bald man would come out with...

reply

I'm not sure what's funnier: Imagining Chris Rock use a Costanza comeback after getting slapped at the Oscars, or seeing all these Seinfeld references fly right over fc31's head.

reply

Ha ha, indeed 👍

Here's the scene in question for the benefit of some viewers:-
https://youtu.be/OfxEvW3jihI

reply

I actually watched Seinfeld (the TV show) several times, though I don't remember any of these.

Then again although I enjoyed the show, it was never my favored.

reply

It's jerk store! It's smart!

reply

Funny! I don't think it would have been a good joke then but it is funny to read now!

reply

everyone laughed when blankman said "slap me around and call me susan"

reply

"He's the first person to win an Oscar for best smacktor" I think that is the best line so far, but I don't know who came up with it originally.

Followings are worth mentioning too:

"Now I know what it feels like to be married to will Smith" is pretty good too, but probably not right for the occasion, also a bit of cheap shot.

"Pretty big of Smith, standing up for another guy's lady like that." is not bad either, but not perfect.

reply

"Best Smacktor"? Really?

If Chris Rock had actually said that, I would have flown 3000 miles to Hollywood just to slap him myself.

reply

Well, I thought it was funny. You taste in humor could be very different.

So any of the lines you have seen you think is funny?

reply

I'm fine with the way Rock handled the situation. No joke was needed.

Smith deserved to sit there with the awkwardness he created after his irrational outburst. A witty, inoffensive joke by Rock would have eased the tension and made everyone comfortable. Instead, Rock's professional and mature reaction effectively highlighted Smith's instability. And rightfully so.

reply

He showed his professionalism and restraint, but as a comedian without a witty comeback is a dent to his comic credential.

Also his restraint could be regarded as docile and weak, that could affect his long term image. Smith might be a cuckold and laughing stock, but when he walked on that stage he showed tremendous balls in comparison, that is not all that bad for his long term reputation.

A witty comeback showing he was not intimidated by Smith would have changed things.

reply

In no way did Smith show "tremendous balls" at the Oscars. What he did show was terrible judgment and a serious lack of impulse control.

And, factoring his acceptance speech into the mix, obvious mental illness.

Chris Rock's image will not be tarnished by the incident. Will Smith's already has been.

reply

If Smith did it out of anger, you would be right. But I don't think that was it. He was not angry, he was laughing like everyone else. When he walked on that stage, there were ease and confidence in his steps, but there was no rush. Rock obviously did not see it coming, so there were likely no anger at least in his expressions.

Acceptance speech I think was written by his people.

I was not talking about short term. I am talking about long term effect, which is hard to tell at the moment.

If you have bias going in, you won't be able to appreciate what was happening in it's entirety

reply

Smith was laughing until his wife made it obvious she was upset. Then he got angry.

He wouldn't have done what he did otherwise. Even if the slap was to only to "make a point", the after-the-fact screaming of profanities at Rock from his seat revealed Smith's true state of mind. He was unhinged.

And the acceptance speech was "written by his people"? Tell me you're joking. What were they going for--man on the verge of a breakdown?

reply

I think they were going with "deeply religious and fiercely protective family man". I bet he could even run for President with that.

reply

Interesting take. A "deeply religious family man"...who happens to be in an open marriage.🤔

Will he be running as a Democrat or Republican?

reply

Probably democrat, open marriage I think it is still too progressive for Republicans, also Smith I think has a history of supporting democrats.

reply

Well I'm sold.

reply

Not doubling down with more jokes earned him respect.

reply

Yes, that showed his professionalism.

But a witty non-offensive comeback would have been better, would have shown his skills as a comedian, would have been legendary, so everyone was a bit disappointed.

reply

Not that he deserved to be assaulted but I thought Rock’s GI Jane joke was really lame as well as insensitive. If I were a comedian, I’d hate to be remembered for that line.

reply

> "Rock’s GI Jane joke was really lame as well as insensitive."

But it wasn't about her medical condition, it was about her shaved head.

Jada Smith was quoted a week before the Oscars as saying she doesn't care what people think of her bald head, because "guess what, I love it". She said this, you can look that quote up.

So when Rock made that joke, it was because she loves her bald head, and GI Jane is actually a strong, bad-ass character. So please tell me what exactly is so insensitive?

reply

I don't know why people don't get it, you are not supposed to make fun of people's ailment, because it was not a choice.

The expression on her face when she heard of that joke says it all.

I bet if someone made fun of your wife of her ailment you'd be angry too. I am not sure you would've behaved any better than Smith.

reply

And why don't YOU get it?

The joke was about her SHAVED HEAD which she is proud of. She stated that only one week ago. She is not ashamed of her shaved head. Chris Rock made no mention of her medical condition.

Not having hair is just "not having hair", it's not like a missing leg, or disability or speech impediment. Many people CHOOSE to shave their head. Nobody chooses to have one leg, or a speech impediment. BIG difference.

reply

The shaved head was due to her condition. Chris deserved a kick to the nuts. He will be remembered forever as that guy who made such a tacky and shitty joke about Will's wife. You roast Will, not Jada.

reply

You're in the 1% of deluded fools who support Will Smith and condone violence in response to jokes

reply

So? Pain is the only thing that corrects people's behavior. Chris will think twice the next time he opens his mouth about something else's wife. Talking does nothing.

reply

No, he won't think twice because he shouldn't need to. Comedians make jokes, that's what they do. There was no behavior to correct, apart from Will Smith's.

"Someone else's wife"... that's old-fashioned sexist thinking. The wife belongs to the husband, and she needs "defending" from words by an angry, shouting husband. Asserting his physical dominance to the whole room and striking anyone who makes a joke he doesn't care for. LOL, what a fucking idiot.

> "Talking does nothing."

So your idea is to solve the world's problems one punch at a time? Great plan, buddy.

reply

The GI Jane reference was a COMPLIMENT. Plus, it destigmatized female shaved heads and helped not only normalize it....but make it badass. Jada missed an opportunity here, to really own it and rock it.

reply

I agree it was a compliment. He picked one of the strongest female roles in movie history. It’s not like he compared her to Lex Luthor or Daddy Warbucks.

reply

Yeah, your wife looks like GI Jane. Nobody will accept that as a compliment. The only reason backseat commentors say it's a compliment because you weren't in his shoes.

reply

Are you calling Demi Moore anno 1997 ugly?
