The ONLY thing Chris did wrong...

...was not come up with a better line after the slap. I’m sure he was a bit stunned, but a great line after the slap could have been the stuff of legend. I mean...David Niven legendary. (Google it you nimrods)

reply

Jokes on the internet have made references to Alec Baldwin. Maybe something like "Phew, I'm glad I didn't say anything about Hilaria!"

Don't agree on Niven. He's comeback line was way too long, which made it obvious it was staged.

reply

That line maybe a bit more outrageous, accusation of murder can be a bit over the top.

reply

Probably, but it would have been a better line.🤷‍♀️

reply

True. That is wittier than most of the lines.

I'd put it at No.2, after "He's the first person to win an Oscar for best smacktor", which was less controversial.

reply

that wouldnt work as not many would know who that is. the joke wouldve had to be 'phew. Im glad Alec baldwin wasnt up for best actor!' *audience laughter*..'damn!..whoa!' etc

reply

Your joke won't work either because the key to the joke was about the wife. If "Hilaria" does not work, then "Alec baldwin's wife" probably would.

reply

Maybe YOU don't know her, but Hilaria is a pretty well known Hollywood wife. I'm not even up-to-date about all these Hollywood types, but even I know her, especially after her own little scandal about her ethnicity. And really, how many people still remember G.I. Jane?

reply

"You still haven't made a solid hit since Independence Day."

reply

Brilliant!

reply

For the rest of his speech, Rock should have pretended he was going to mention Smith's wife again, just to keep him on the edge of his seat.

"Yada yada yada, people will gossip about this incident for years"
"Mrs. Smith is the one with the balls, you know the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith?"
"Pinkett or pinkish, what do you call this color?"

Suggestions?

reply

Other than the first one, I think the rest is no good.

Smith is the one walked on stage, whatever you think of him, he showed enormous balls.

"Pinkett or pinkish", mentioning the wife again was not a good idea, making fun of people's name is also not good humor, more like schoolyard taunts.

reply

Why?
He didn’t do anything wrong.

reply

I think he played it as well as he could have. He just got smacked on National TV, and did his best to minimize the situation in a comedic way.

Of course, the situation is going to be a memorable Oscar moment that is going to be replayed forever, but I think Chris played the moment reasonably. I mean, Chris could have easily made it worse by letting his ego ride on the same level that Will Smith did.

reply

"I wonder what teachable moment Uncle Phil would have made out of this."

reply

That Chris Rock moment had to be one of the loneliest moments for anyone, and double that for when these disgusting actors and bigshots of the entertainment industry comforted and came out in agreement with Will Smith. That was disgusting, and all of Hollywood can go F itself for all I care. That is not Western Civilization or Rule of Law ... that was some sick BS.

reply

Frankly I don't watch the Oscars cause I don't watch a lot of modern movies. But it seems rather off tone to have someone talk about a serious political issue then have some guy come on and make a politically incorrect joke. I'd rather just have an Oscar Host who isn't a comedian.
