Saying "Like" Every Other Word

Don't they realize how stupid this sounds? I can't listen to this kind of shit. Not that I encounter it, but if I do (watching a YouTube video), I immediately turn it off.

It started out as Valley Girl talk but I think now it's just a verbal crutch, kind of like the way the word "so" became, as a lead-in to something.

For most people, people repeat what they hear.... My cousin was just over, and he kept saying it over and over and had to remind him..

reply

Better than “uh.”

reply

Like why do you like let it bother you.

reply

you missed a 'like' between it and bother.

reply

I like didn't want to overwhelm him.

I FIND IT ANNOYING GENERALLY....AT ONE TIME MY FATHER LITERALLY BEAT THE HABIT OUT OF ME....I WILL SAY....I FIND IT FAIRLY CUTE WHEN CERTAIN WOMEN DO IT THOUGH.🤡

The constant use of like leads my pet peeves of goofy grammar. Even worse is the , “So , I’m like….” “So he’s like….” And the worst, “ So I go….”, “ So she goes to me…”.

The word they are searching their little brains for is SAID. Since when did like and go become synonymous for speaking?

Very intelligent people or at least those people who have a coherent grasp on their thoughts do not speak that way.

When I hear it used incessantly in an interview, it is time to turn it off.

Just this afternoon, while sitting in the waiting room while my car was getting four new tires, I had to listen to two guys in the office/counter area discussing restaurants around town. Between the two of them, the "likes" were flying back and forth between them. I was there for two hours, and the only time they stopped their conversation was when the occasional customer came in to drop off or pick up their car.

I am over the "so" thing, too. I hear it a lot during radio interviews. It seems that every answer begins with "so." 🙄

reply

That’s like your opinion, man.

reply

I don't, like, like that - youknowwhutimsayin ?

When I was in junior high/9th grade, I realized I was using "like" and "umm" too often, so I consciously told myself to pause my breath before I could mutter those things.

It somehow worked for me.

reply

Like literally!
