What are some movies that you were surprised to learn are actually considered "bad"?

These are some that I can recall, that genuinely surprised me when I finally got on the Internet & stuff.

Some bombed at the box office, most were panned by critics & some were the butt of jokes.

1. Waterworld (1995) - It was on tv a lot growing up & my friend & I freaking loved it.

2. Baby's day out (1994) - I have not seen this one in ages but man, this was watched so many freaking times by the whole household.

3. Wild Wild West (1999) - Even as an adult, I like this one. It's not great but man it's a fun watch

4. Last Action Hero (1993) - Saw this a teen & I freaking loved it. Charles Dance is excellent in it

5. Over the Top (1987) - One of Sly Stallone's forgotten films. Freaking loved this one growing up. Would watch I every time it was on TV.

Waterworld and Last Action Hero are Great!!!. Here are the movies I love but were considered hated when they came out.

UHF
Men at Work
Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead
Deuce Bigelow- European Gigalo

I've only seen "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" once, two decades ago. Don't remember anything about it. Might rewatch.

And not a big fan of European Gigolo, personally. Wanted to like it but couldn't.

I still like the first one though.

THE DISHES ARE DONE,MAN!

reply

No! Not Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, that was my childhood along with Adventures in Babysitting and Nightmare on Elm Street! How dare they underrate this masterpiece haha.

reply

I'm just stating it was very hated when it came out but definitely found its audience once it came to cable and VHS.

reply

Yeah, I can see it being very cult-classic, along with a lot of films I love, I was just joking. I just don't know how it was singled out as bad when the early 90s was the era for fun, goofy movies like this.

The Alamo (1960)

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen

reply

Who the hell is saying that terrific movie is bad???!!!???

reply

Waterworld is actually decent, it's sort of a Mad Max on jet skis sort of thing. I suspect some of the bad rep is that it went over budget and there were delays during filming. The worldwide gross was $260M vs. a $175M budget so who knows how they made out financially on that one, the studios spend a ton of money on junket trips and advertising.

I enjoyed it well enough though.

reply

It IS Mad Max on water instead of sand but it's still a fun time imo.

And also, Dennis Hopper is a hoot!

reply

Ok, I enjoy goofball humor, no apologies. Chris Elliot, TKITH, Dana Carvey, the Upright Citizens Brigade, Marty Short, SCTV,.....

So... Master Of Disguise gets dumped on by everyone, but I don't care - it has great moments. People decide to jump on a harmless movie meant for little kids with send-ups of characters that adults like me can appreciate.

I welcome your hatred of me for loving a movie that you choose quite arbitrarily to hate - e.g., where is the hate for, say, The Love Guru ? .....Oh, you hate that one too. Well, in that case, I sort of agree.

reply

I'm one of the few people who likes The Love Guru.

reply

It was funny. Just a step down from his earlier stuff, and ran into a bit of a stiff PC wind.

reply

Definitely not one of his best works but still good for a chuckle or two

reply

Two John Wayne films, The Conqueror and The Green Berets.

The Conqueror gets panned because Wayne plays a Mongol and The Green Berets because it's not very accurate.

If viewed purely as entertainment both are decent movies.

Pearl Harbor is another one that gets panned but is an entertaining film nonetheless.

reply

The main thing I disliked about Pearl Harbor was the love triangle. Apart from that, it's a damn good war movie.

reply

Yeah that part is a bit cringe worthy especially how it ends and the kids name. I re-watched it recently and still felt it held up well asides from that.

reply

Masters of the Universe. (1987)

reply

you left out the Lone Ranger I personally loved Tonto

reply

The one with Johnny Depp? Saw that one in theaters. Don't remember much about it but I do recall really loving the final action sequence on the train..

That was a fun set piece imo.
