Writer’s strike

Is this still going on, and does anyone care? Late night comedy has been on repeats for months, yet no one seems to care. SNL has been off too, and no one cares. Is this the final nail in the coffin of late night comedy and the talk show era?

reply

They need to sack them and bring in proper writers. Most current tv shows are awful.

reply

Amen!

reply

What TV shows do you like?

reply

Yeah, he needs to tell us.

reply

Yes. I think they've been "beating a dead horse" for a while now. Majority of people haven't cared about late night tv or talk shows in general for a couple of years now.

In my opinion, Youtubers & Podcasters have done a much much better job interviewing people in recent years.

I haven’t watched late night in twenty five years with the exception of Stephen Colbert who I thought very highly of.

I wasn’t even aware that there was a late night writer’s strike, I guess I just don’t much care.

There’s so much to watch on the multitude of streaming services that there is no reason to stay up all night for a few bits of comedy.

I lost interest in Late Night TV a long time ago, Dave Letterman was the last of the greats and even he got too partisan by the end of his run. Just to be clear, the strike is more than just late night TV https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Writers_Guild_of_America_strike

How dumb was a certain actress? She slept with the writer.

reply

Yes, it's still going on because the Producers Guild has not met the pay/working condition demands of the writers. Remember that producers ultimately approve scripts, so if you think that turning writing into day labor will improve quality across the board, I don't know what to tell you.

Here's a brief rundown of that the WGA is seeking:

I gave up on late night Tv when every show made fun of Trump.

What's really disturbing is the fact that a.) apparently Hollyweird didn't learn a danged thing about how to treat their writers from the 2007 strike, and b.) the strike isn't gonna work this time around because the studios now have streaming, AI (which might actually be an improvement over the crappy writers they have been employing) and they can now outsource for content.

On the comedic side, the various film studios are using the strike as an excuse to fire people they can't stand (such as those pointless diversity and inclusion officers), and shutting down/deleting shows they knew were a waste of time and money to make and pretty much nobody was watching them.

reply

Most writers are awful these days. Nothing has leapt off the screen and impressed me a lot. So many lame jokes everywhere.

reply

Comedy is declining. Serious dramatic content is not

reply

That sounds fair.
