Have you ever dined in an upscale restaurant by yourself?

The most upscale restaurant where I've dined by myself is a Chicago-area steakhouse known as Wildfire. Even if I was solo I was able to enjoy my prime rib dinner with minimal distractions.

Wildfire is a somewhat upscale restaurant with fancy old-school decor and related trimmings.

Not often, but yes. Typically steakhouse or Italian.

reply

Ah, cool!

A few times I've had last minute cancellations on work-related outings and figured I might as well not let the company card go to waste.

Good idea!

Anything is a good idea in hindsight. Check out this recent He-Man fan film:

Just once. They kept asking me if I was expecting my date and apologizing when I explained I was alone. It was very uncomfortable but that's what I get for not sitting at the bar.

reply

Yeah, when I went alone to Wildfire they sat me at the bar.

Never by myself.

Never alone.

I don’t know exactly what you mean by upscale. I’ve never eaten at a five star restaurant but if you mean regular places like Texas Roadhouse, Olive Garden, etc. I eat all the time at those kind of places usually by myself.

The restaurants you mentioned are probably not upscale. I guess by "upscale" I mean they have fancy decor and like you said - probably five star (and maybe four star as well.) I'd say Lawry's is an example of a national chain that is such.

reply

I would never eat at a real fancy restaurant unless I was taking a woman on a date.

Not sure how unusual this is, but at home I think I’d feel weird and self-conscious eating anywhere [at dinner] by myself. Conversely, having traveled abroad solo a couple times, I not only don’t feel weird when doing so, I am more gregarious and usually end up in conversation with locals and making friends. Got lucky more often when single, too and even to the point where I met the mother of this adorable Mestiza girl in Palenque, MX…

Sorry! Drifted off for a bit. :D tl;dr: fancy restaurants are for when the company is paying, and I’m always in a group on work trips, or a special group occasion.

reply

Wow, that's cool! Glad to see you have a fun time!

I've do it at diners and fast food, no second thought. And I'll do a good Asian restaurant at lunch by myself, if I'm out and about. But upscale, no. That's a date.
