Why did the 1990s have so many crime thrillers?
sort of like film noir and the 1950s.
sharePerhaps lots of people who grew up during that time developed certain tastes and in adulthood reached a living status that allowed them to attend the movies that appealed to them. In short, the market at the time supported adult-oriented thriller/potboiler movies, and so film companies attempted to meet that demand.
shareI've watched a lot of good crime thrillers (a favorite genre) from that decade on tubi and I think that question might have entered my mind also at some time.
shareBecause they were awesome and the 90s was the era for neo noir.
shareMel Gibson's Payback (1999) is a perfect example.
shareWHICH VERSION DO YOU PREFER?...ORIGINAL OR DIRECTOR'S CUT? NOEMOJI
shareI've seen one several times and I don't know which one it was. Isn't the director's cut usually considered to be the better one?
shareTHE THEATRICAL VERSION HAS A LIGHTER TONE AND A HAPPIER ENDING...THE DIRECTORS CUT HAS A BLUE TINT...NO NARRATION... IS MUCH MORE SERIOUS AND HAS AN AMBIGUOUS ENDING THAT IS KIND OF A DOWNER...BOTH ARE GOOD AND BOTH HAVE THEIR SUPPORTERS...I THINK I PREFER THE THEATRICAL...BUT I UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE LIKE THE DIRECTOR'S CUT TOO. NOEMOJI
shareOk, so I've seen the theatrical version then. I like the narration because that was often an element in original film noir. I would like to see the director's cut now, just to make my own comparison. Thanks Kowalski. That's some good info. Still NOEMOJI huh? When you going to get that fixed?π Don't mean to rub it in.π
shareANY DAY NOW I SHOULD BE ON THE NEW PC...I HAVE GOTTEN VERY USED TO TYPING NOEMOJI NOW THOUGH...ITS GOING TO BE HARD TO STOP. NOEMOJI
shareAs I said before, I became very used to doing without them for several years. Now I'm used to having them again. We are, after all, creatures of habit, easily programmed by circumstances.
sharewhat movie started this neo-noir trend?

I think Chinatown is considered the first neo-noir. After Dark, My Sweet (1990) is probably one of the first good 90s neo-noirs. The Grifters (1990), Basic Instinct (1992), One False Move (1992), or even Kill Me Again (1989) could have been starters.
shareI think the success of Jagged Edge & Fatal Attraction in the 80's inspired more to be made in the 90's, the 1990's had so many big hit movies considered to be neo-noir than the 1980's.

I'm not American but as far as I know crime in general really peaked there in the 90s. Art imitates life.
shareProbably because of advancements to forensic science in relation to catching criminals, particularly DNA profiling and fingerprinting, which occurred in the late 80s. It only follows that this would be studied by film makers and portrayed in the 90s, not only to explain these advancements but also to explain why catching criminals in previous decades wasn't as easy.
