Why did the 1990s have so many crime thrillers?

sort of like film noir and the 1950s.

reply

it didn't. If you play with IMDb search - Feature Film, Crime - you get:
80s 2591
90s 3191
00s 3954
10s 7141

For me the question now is why the big jump in the previous decade?

reply

Because of more cable channels and streaming channels. More movies being made in general.

good point. One of these days I'm going to have a real dig into the data IMDb makes available and see what kind trends stand out.

reply

Well that will definitely keep you busy lol. We look forward to your findings. πŸ‘πŸ‘

those numbers are surprising.

reply

I guess it was actually a pretty crude count and it's quite probable that most of the better (or at least better remembered) films are from the 90s.

reply

Mostly people imitating Quentin Tarantino.

reply

I don't see Quentin as being film noir/neo noir, he just goes for a cheap shock factor. He is more about making D Grade films on huge budgets.

reply

It seems the genre made a comeback in the late 80s.

I think it also being a time before PC/Woke played a part. A lot of the films back then were sexy and often the female characters weren't perfect or victims either. "The Last Seduction" (1994) is a perfect example of that.
