Who was supposed to be the next big actor (for better or for worse). But never happened?

For the longest time you could have said this about Anthony Mackie until fairly recently.

Terrance Howard

Fairuza Balk, although she kinda self sabotaged.

Lisa Bonet, I guess her daughter picked up the mantle.

Joel Kinnamen

Technically The Rock in terms of action stars, because he never got that signature iconic starring role yet imo.

Iko Iwais, maybe it's the language barrier? Same with Tony Jaa

Donny Yen, he had to move back to China to become a big star.

Derek Luke

Kerry Washington

Kadeem Hardison

Sam Worthington was less a rising star and more like a teacher's pet being shoved down your throat by Hollywood. But his career never really took off regardless.

Paula Patton. Like wtf happened there??

reply

Like him or not, I can't see how The Rock isn't considered a big star by any measure.
Isn't there a sitcom about what his childhood must have been like? Little Rock?

Seems like Taylor Kitsch, I guess off the strength of Friday Night Lights, was given a couple potential blockbusters to propel him into A-list status, but I don't think it's worked out.

reply

I think it’s the nature of Rock’s films. Most aren’t very good and are just silly.

I don’t think he cares, he is in it to make bank.

reply

HE IS DOING THE SCHWARZENEGGER THING AND THAT'S COOL...A LOT OF US ENJOY ENTERTAINING ACTION FLICKS...HE HAS TIME TO EXPERIMENT WITH DEEPER ROLES IF WANTS.

Alexandra Daddario

Alden Ehrenreich

Most of the Game of Thrones cast. None of them have done anything of note since.

Minor success for Jason with Aquaman.

reply

Josh Harnett...was slated to become the next big megastar in the early 2000's starred in Pearl Harbor alongside Affleck...career just fizzled but I heard that was Josh's choice to not become huge.

reply

Yeah, I think certain entertainers chicken out when they start to become too big too fast. Not to mention the hard work that comes with it. Other THRIVE in that environment tho. So it depends.

reply

I think they would refer to him as the next Tom Cruise.

Aaron Paul

Brendan Fraser.

mickey rourke

He's had a decades long reputation in Hollywood for being notoriously unhygienic. Just look at him in his movies. Long, greasy, stringy hair, a generally slovenly appearance. Other actors can't stand being next to him because of his stench. Forcing them to endure that is extremely arrogant and disrespectful. He's been his own worst enemy.

reply

i had no idea. bo is never a good thing.

reply

This is somewhat more recent but I remember reading about it during the 80s.

surely long greasy hair is down to makeup and costume?

they dont just let stars turn up in their slobbing around the house clothes to make a movie
