What's the infatuation with cars?

Cars are simply glorified butt movers. They move your rear-end from here to there. They can only move in 4 directions. Why do you need a Lamborghini to drive 25 mph (40 kph) through downtown? What's the point of driving obsolete 60 year old cars? How can anybody enjoy driving when so much time is spent in traffic?

1.The engineering can be fascinating
2. The styling can make them works of art

I'm guessing it's somehow like the infatuation of complaining about stuff you don't need to engage in. It does you no harm but you still have to make a talking point of it.

reply

Thank you!

reply

Bingo.

The possibilities are limitless: What's the infatuation with sports/food/fishing/hiking/gardening/photography/computer games/movies........?

What's the deal with airline peanuts??

What's the deal with people saying 'what's the deal anyway'?

reply

Its a thing. Much like saying things are A Thing is a thing now .

reply

Wait! What? It’s a thing to say that a things a thing?

reply

Drive a Lamborghini Huracan at 240mph down a back straight, then we’ll talk.

They say something of the time and place they were made.

I love a road trip!

Getting stuck in traffic is annoying, but I'm in my own space on my own timetable. I used to hate waiting for busses, especially in the winter.

I don't care what car I'm driving though. As long as it works that's all I'm interested in.

reply

I love a road trip too, but I love the sense of crossing the world under my own power, and seeing what there is to see, and hopefully I also love whoever I'm with... I have no feelings for the car itself. Unless it gives trouble, and then I'm pissed at it.

So I don't experience car love myself, but I've seen enough "Top Gear" and "Grand Tour" to understand a bit of it. They love the speed and ease of travel and the sense of being masters of their own little moving universe, and some of them also completely geek out over every little detail of their car or cars in general, or the millions of kinds of cars that have been made over the years. Frankly the latter looks like an interest that's only available to the very rich or car industry insiders, but as a birdwatcher, I've got no right to talk shit about other people's silly hobbies.

reply

I like the kind that start and take me from place to place. Other than that, I don't care. But I know I'm in the minority.

reply

I'm pretty much the same. They're to get me from A to B, and hopefully back again.

I think we could add Ferrari, Maserati, Bugatti and Aston Martin to the list.

The Japanese have made some pretty cool stuff too!
admittedly a lot of it "inspired by" the stuff You & Groove said

The car I would love to have is a 63 split window Corvette - 2 years shy of 60 years old and I would sell my first born to own one.

reply

That's hot stuff right there!
I knew a guy at work that had a gold colored one

It was a work of art

reply

Beautiful car and only made for that one year. Did you know a kit was made to convert the rear window to eliminate the split? Apparently some people thought it blocked the view - what a travesty!!!!!

The car of my dreams.

That's my color too

She's a beaut!

Two summers ago, I customized the interior of my Miata, and if you click on the interior view of the Vette, that is exactly the color combo I used - door panels and seats.
