Horror Movie Recommendations

Hi all,

I am searching for some well made scary horror movies that don't involve repetitive jump scares.

Any suggestions?

One that I really like is the Japanese movie "Noroi" from 2005. Nice atmospheric horror. Another great one is the Canadian movie "The Changeling" from 1980. I couldn't sleep after watching that one.

I second The Changeling. One of the all-time great ghost stories. The scene where Scott first hears the little boy's voice on the tape still gives me goosebumps.

my favorite canadian made movie

Really good selection 👍👍

This list made me realize that I don't like much horror released within the last 20 years.

Yeah the mediocre outweighs the classics now for sure, it’s depressing scrolling through the recent horror movies on Netflix, but there’s been a few gems this century. The Witch is another I’d add. I think A24 is the saving grace for horror right now.

reply

I was going to add Don't Breathe because I really liked that one but I don't remember if it had a lot of jump scares.

Let The Right One In (2008)

A damn great entry among mediocre modern horror.

Session 9

Yes!
Worthy of several viewings

reply

The more you watch it, the more it makes you think.

reply

It's similar to Shutter Island in that it's very well made, spooky and you have really surprising climactic scene

The end of that one when he’s sitting in the truck outside really sticks with me.

"I live in the weak and the wounded, Doc."

Still gives me shivers!

Simon's voice is the creepiest I've ever heard. I shudder thinking of it 😣

Just watched this because it was mentioned in this thread. I liked it. But I feel like I didn't completely understand what happened.

Read the posts on it's board with people's theories then watch it again 👍

The Descent

Fantastic film!

reply

Agreed, it's quite underrated.

Fallen (1998). More of a supernatural thriller than straight horror, but a kick-ass movie.

That darn cat!

Fantastic ending.
