Icehouse.

Anyone here heard of this reasonably popular 1980s Australian new-wave/pop-rock/synth-pop band fronted by lead (male) vocalist Iva Davies?

I'm sure most of us at least have heard, even if without knowing what it is and who performs it, the early 80s hit single "Hey' Little Girl" on a radio at least a few times, I have of course, but has anyone listened to much other songs by them?

I think they're pretty good overall, and yes I even own some of their albums on CDs including one compilation and have heard most of their music.

These days I am especially hooked on "No Promises", if you haven't heard it, hear it, its amazing, a superb mix of the more poppier side of Bryan Ferry, INXS (another but much more well known 80s Australian pop-rock band, 20 years ago its singer Michael Hutchence committed suicide by the way), OMD, Depeche Mode and David Bowie, but enough to stand on its own - link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDZHApjM-SQ (Sing it with me - "No promises, but if you should fall...")

They are no Orange Organics TM, and so it's a no from me.

What are Orange Organics any way? And even if so, music-wise, does it really distract much?

reply

I liked them, you can find them on Google.

I own their first album which is called Icehouse and they were called Flowers. They changed their name to Icehouse as there was another band called Flowers at the time. Great album, great band. I saw them live a few years ago.

I love Icehouse, I seriously do.
I listen to them all the time. I saw them perform at Milton Keynes Bowl supporting David Bowie back in the 80's.
My favourite tracks are Glam, Great Southern land, Goodnight. Mr. Matthews, Trojan Blue.

"Man of Colours" is also a superb, haunting and very touching late 80s pop ballad, and the 1987 album with same title is very good too.

Saw the subject line and honestly thought this was about the awfully cheap beer I drank in college.

reply

Haha, not quiet "space comedy". And speaking of Icehouse the band, have you heard of them and them, especially their aforementioned in here popular hits?

reply

Yes they provided the soundtrack to this haunting piece of art from Dom Joly's tv show

I think "Electric Blue" is a great song. Icehouse is one of those musical acts that had their heyday during my college years (Fall 1987 to Spring 1991) and their music just takes me back to that time period.

This song was played in clubs a lot in the late 80s - early 90’s and I had it on many mixtapes. Lots of great memories and I now have it on vinyl 12” single.

Awesome! That's one of the things that I love about music...how a song can bring back memories and mean something different to different people. Yes, that song got a lot of airplay back then. I think it's a great song!

Great Southern Land is by far their best song, they released a remix of it just last year that was decent too.
