What's Your Song?

Music is powerful.
We all have songs that can remind of us a certain event or take us back
to a certain good time.

Two that come to my mind first are

Power Windows by Billy Falcon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLIFnMExtNs&list=RDiLIFnMExtNs
Reminds me of somebody very close to me who isn’t around anymore.
A lot of good memories.

Devil Inside- INXS
Reminds of one night at the Devil House at ASU.
One glorious debauchery filled night.

What songs do it for you?

reply

All these songs remind of a friend of mine and some wild times we had.

Butthole Surfers- Pepper

Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet With Butterfly Wings
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-r-V0uK4u0

reply

I missed the Butthole Surfers era. lol

reply

Haha.

It truly was your loss.
At least we'll always have Anne Murray.

reply

Toronto had quite the punk movement in the early 1980s and there used to be these concerts held in the eastern end of the city in some abandoned warehouse. I actually went to a couple of concerts and witnessed the young white male suburban angst up close and personal. The music didn't seem to matter as long as it was loud.

reply

I remember those days.
You're right loud was a prerequisite. A good way to blow off some steam too.
Some good music came out of that post disco era.

reply

All great tracks, especially Spacehog - one of my favorites. Very Bowie-esque.

reply

It really is.

There was some good music that came out of this time.
I haven't even tackled the 80's yet. That list would be too long.
Apparently I was feeling a little nostalgic today. lol

reply

These songs remind me of a simpler time.
Staying up late, camping, sleepovers hanging out with friends listening to the radio.

Steely Dan - Do It Again
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sil76t2X_DE

Michael Martin Murphey - Wildfire
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pc3OnSQc48s

Gordon Lightfoot - Sundown
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8rR7E6NfY4

Paper Lace - The Night Chicago Died
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-L0NpaErkk

Terry Jacks - Seasons In The Sun
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YG9otasNmxI

America- Tin Man
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uJL8er_tV0

Paul Simon - Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6VrKro8djw&list=RDZ6VrKro8djw&t=15

reply

You have a eclectic taste in music from Butthole Surfers to Terry Jacks

reply

I grew up with this music and 70's country.
I also had all my moms old 45's.
I have all these songs on my IPod. Let's talk eclectic.

Take these for a spin

The Irish Rovers - The Unicorn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EPsuOEH1fY

The Avons -Seven Little Girls
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1cjaheraq8

The Shangri-Las -Leader Of The Pack
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8UKf65NOzM

reply

The Irish Rovers were a Toronto based group, my parents loved that group. I am surprised you have heard of them. They had a show on Canadian TV for years

reply

I never knew that. Your parents had good taste.

My mom had quite an extensive record collection.
I got a taste of quite a wide range of music.
My grandparents also introduced me to music before that.
I've always had music in my life from as long as I can remember.

It is somewhat worrisome that I like so many Canadian artists.
I may have to rethink this.

reply

A favorite cut from an album I have of Satchmo's greatest hits. These two harmonize so beautifully on here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3uvhyBDFV0

reply

That is so cool.

Strangely enough I just watched Crosby in The Bells of St. Mary's a few days ago.

reply

I experience that sort of thing often, dewey. We're just like minded people. I also have a very diverse collection of music.

reply

Not to be a downer, but Wind Beneath My Wings always reminds me of my sister. She died shortly after Bette Midler's version was a hit. Which means I rarely listen to it because it makes me miss her all the more even though she's been gone for years.

reply

I'm so sorry GlenEllyn.
Music has that ability to make us think of the good and bad.

If she was even half like you I know she was an incredible person.

reply

Thanks Dewey.

Devil Inside- INXS
Reminds of one night at the Devil House at ASU.

Did you attend ASU?

reply

I did not.

I lived in AZ for many years and had friends that went to ASU and NAU for that matter.
I spent a good deal of time at those places.
Unfortunately studying wasn't on the agenda.

reply

I didn't either, but I lived in AZ for 8 years. At one time I was dating a guy who had season tickets to Sun Devil football, so I got to attend a number of games. Good times.

reply

OK, you must have lived in the Phoenix area?
Did you ever go to the Devil House or any other places?

I lived in Tucson for about 15 years or so.

reply

I lived in Phoenix, then Glendale, and Mesa the last 3 years I was there. Of course, this was a hundred years ago (seems like it anyway). No, never went to the Devil House. I used to spend Saturday nights at Manzanita Speedway. It was great fun - dirt track racing, sprint cars were my favorite, but also modified, super-modified, and street stocks. I visited Tucson several times - the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and Old Tucson, too. Skied at the Snowbowl in Flagstaff, visited the red rocks of Sedona, and Jerome.

reply

I've been to Manaznita.
In those days I was into racing a little bit.
We had a good fried of the family, Hershel McGriff who used to race a lot in those days.
He was more of a stock car guy but did win the Winston West Series in 1986.
I got to hang out in the pits for a couple races that year.

The desert museum is beautiful. I've been to Old Tucson several times also.
Good history there.

Right now with this weather I wish I was smack dab in the middle of the desert.

reply

I hear you. Right now it's -16, which, since it's just after 11 pm, means we'll hit at least -20. Argh.

reply

It really is ridiculous isn't it.

We know what sun and rain does but what does the cold do?
I can't see any good that comes from this sub zero weather.
Other than makes us appreciate the warm weather I guess.

reply

We finally get relief here on Sunday. It's supposed to get up to 28. Above! Wahoo! A chance to get outside for a while without getting frostbite.

reply

I saw that.
We may even get above freezing next week. Barely.
All this means is instead of snow we'll have freezing rain.
So much to look forward to. lol
How did we get so lucky.

reply

Torn (1997) by Natalie Imbruglia. Back in 2014 I fell in love with the song, after decades of only hearing it casually.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV1XWJN3nJo

I also then realized a lot of the songs I like have the word "faith" in them, kinda interesting.

reply

It's a nice cover.

This is the original
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyuGaU4rXjA

Both are really good.

Haven't seen you in GD before.
Welcome aboard.

Faith in anything is always a good thing. ;)

reply

Yeah, been out and about--was actually one of the first here from IMDB, but I usually chat in the various movie/tv forums.

reply

Today, I pick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4h51YBt2lA

(It irritates me to no end that the above video only includes about half the song, but I can't find the full version anywhere in an easy to post format, so if it tickles your earballs at all, try to track down the album it's on. All Eleanor Friedberger is good Eleanor Friedberger!)

reply

Good song.

I found this one

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68-A61LUSDk

reply

Nice version. I'm only a tad obsessed with her and hadn't found that video yet, so thanks!

reply

The Wanderer by Johnny Cash

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlkiK_q7shc

reply

Now you're talking.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTAZ7xzZKAw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ED5s1-Fe9FA

reply

I can listen to Johnny all day. Sunday Morning Coming Down seems it was tailored made from him. Great vocals.

reply

Me too.

I have just as much Cash in my music then anybody else.
There was also an episode of Drunk History about this song.
This is just a small clip. I can't find the whole thing.
It was really funny.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klcIjmbq_Hg

reply

I read a good bio on Johnny a few years ago - he was never clean from the pills. He didn't drink booze but couldn't get off the pain meds.

reply

I think it was Waylon Jennings who started him on the pills. Maybe vice versa.

He had quite a life though.

reply

I think Johnny started back in the 50s with the uppers and downers, same as Elvis.

reply

If I remember correctly I think Cash and Jennings used to live together
back in the 50's.

reply

In was in the 1960s between Johnny's marriages I believe - there was a whole lot of alcohol and drug consumption. The were periods of time when they never left the house.

reply

OK, I knew it was sometime back then.
Pretty amazing they went on to have the careers they did.

It also helped shape their music.

reply

Here comes Santa Claus by Gene Autry, reminds me of his horse Champion

reply

That's so weird because We Are the Champions always reminds me of Queen.
Small world , huh.

reply

sooo, you're saying Gene is a Queen?

reply

For as much as I love that title and would watch that show ...no.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Gene was a hep-cat.

Fly To the Angels would be the song that reminds me of him.

reply

that was a joke, but the other song I like is "Happy Trails to You" reminds me of Nellie

reply

Yeah I know. ;)

So was mine about Fly To the Angels.
He used to own the Angels baseball team for about 30 years.

Get it? Get it?
Well do you?!?!

reply

I know about him owning the team, but, there's a song "Fly to the angels"???

reply

Big hair big greatness. 🤘

As usual all the stars in the night shine in your name amigo.
