*de Schinkel. ;-)
Couldn't the land still be uninhabitable and inhospitable even if it's realitvely close to de Schinkel's mansion?
"The old woman said a major distraction, like a fire alarm. A drunk tripping and a grease fire ain't that major."
Under these circumstances they would've gone back and checked everything on the surveillance tapes that seemed even remotely out of the ordinary. Someone would definitely have seen him pushing the girl down the stairs or putting those bottles in the fryer. It wasn't a regular fryer fire either, there would've been pieces of glass all over the kitchen.
The same can be said when the Butcher is on the roof and snoops around for information from the cops there. They wouldn't have told him anything and would've questioned why a man who could fit the description would want to know that.

Keller was always a prisoner (mentally) since he and his family wouldn't be able to move on until they found the daughter, or the body of the daughter.
Late to the party, but I just wanted to say you've got a point.
Did we ever get an explanation to why the police didn't question the father more about Alex whereabouts? He should've been a clear suspect.
It vanished.
Ha, ha, ha! :-D
The movie was tricky like that. You start to watch it and get mesmerized by Shiloh's bountiful bosom, but it turns out it was just a push-up brah and Becky's rack was bigger this whole time.
