Why did he present himself as a lawyer?

At the dinner date with Mary Tim presents himself presents himself as a lawyer. I'm no English speaker but isn't lawyer the American term of solicitor? I'm probably completely confused here, but why didn't he say he was a solicitor?

Interesting, I would have agreed with you but apparently:
In the UK a lawyer is anyone who could give legal advice. So, this term encompasses Solicitors, Barristers, and legal executives.

I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing!

Because he is a lawyer. He went to law school earlier in the movie.

He may have said it because Mary is American and he thought she would know that term better than the British solicitor or barrister terms. Tim was actually a barrister because he wore a wig and defended clients in court.

True. Thank you!
