Those horrible things are more the result of religion---NOT atheism---but most religious people are in denial about the truth.They can't handle it.

I thought the same thing.Going crazy was unnecessary.The alarm would have been enough.If the girl would have just taken advantage of the alarm sound,the old man for once wouldn't have heard where she was.That would have opened the door to some cool stuff,given that the writers would have had some imagination.
