if it wasn't all a dream, then it makes no sense for duvall not to bring a bodyguard or a weapon to the room. he would also be on guard for anything.

where i come from, just saying it was all a dream is a huge cop out. i'd rather have a story that doesn't fallback onto that silly notion.
I enjoyed it as well. This is what suspense is supposed to be like.
Just watched the 2002 version for the first time in over 10 years, and i gotta say that the replay value is off the charts! I found so many new things to appreciate about it. The acting is nuanced, characters believable and fun, and the dialog is pure prose. The sets and costumes are extremely detailed; I especially liked the time machine and the laboratory. After watching it i wanted to see what IMDB rated it at, and was absolutely APPALLED to see 5.6!!!
So, I went over, and rated it a 10/10 just to bump the rating. This movie does a masterful job of bringing the story to modern film, in a great re-watchable way. And, it is definitely a million years away from being a pile of shit, hahaha. peAce --Zane

So, have you actually met someone with this supposed ultra paranoid personality that Jake had in this silly movie? No, I didn't think so, because it's not a great character study at all. It's just unrealistic violence porn. Great acting?! Tah! More like a couple of overpaid over hyped Italian buddies. I could be great too if the mob paid my way, and propped me up at every turn.
He probably made up most of the crap in his autobiography. No one acts like that in reality.

Wow, you really need to watch more Film. Start with Hitchcock. This movie was unrealistic in the story and especially the characters. No one is that paranoid and abusive. It's waaaay over the top, and over-rated junk by the Italian Mafia.
No one is that paranoid. That's why the movie just doesn't work. It's ridiculous.
Italian Mafia propped up a ton of stupid movies just like this one before the Jews took over hollyweird.
