I was thinking the same thing!!! I mean what in the hell?! It seemed really out of place. They just want to train their army of Pavlovian dogs to play the part, and act like these nazis.
Agreed! This garbage was incoherent drivel! I am halfway through with it now, and have turned it off. This is the LAST Joaquin Phoenix movie i will ever watch! All his movies are like this. Stupid filler scenes, and all action is pretty much cut out. They do these dumbass movies on a low budget. All they need is POS Joaquin, a hammer, a girl in a nighty, and an old lady. After watching the best of Alfred Hitchcock the past few weeks, and then seeing this trash, i just couldn't make it to the end.
Has it ever happened to you where you dream you woke up, and started your day only to realize your alarm clock goes off, and you're still in bed? That is an odd feeling for sure.
So, perhaps this opening scene is commentary on the notion that life is but a dream?
It would explain it perfectly that David is already dreaming a long dream of life where he could have all his future memories already embedded within his subconscious.
What's more is we could be the same way, and not even know it. Ever wonder why you dream? It's all connected. Know it in your heart, you 'are' dreaming right now! It's not fleeting like a traditional dream, but rather it's more sophisticated, enthralling, surprising, and gripping.
Have you ever done psychedelics? That is one way to realize that you are dreaming right now. You are a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy in a dream within a dream within a dream within a dream within a dream, your consciousness is infinite, and can be copied into many simulations/dreams (like in that movie 13th floor).
Modern science even now admits that it's mathematically probable that we are living in a computer simulation! Hold onto your hats Dorthy 'cause we're not in Kansas anymore! :-)
Bill Hicks said it best:
"The world is like a ride at an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it, you think it's real, cause that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round; it has thrills and chills and it's very brightly colored and it's very loud and it's fun... for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question: "Is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, and they say, "Hey - don't worry, don't be afraid - EVER - because... this is just a ride."
