Well, my lack of sympathy for Tonya Harding still stands. If you don't like it, too bad. I'm still of the opinion that she fucked up her own skating career for life because she committed two crimes. Just because she wasn't convicted by cops, etc., doesn't mean that Tonya was innocent. The fact that the Figure Skating Committee banned her for life has nothing to do with her class background. When somebody takes a career in the sports world, s/he can expect to be scrutinized more closely and more often by the media and the general public, and a certain amount of decorum is expected, which Tonya displayed none of. It has nothing to do with her class background, either. Nancy Kerrigan didn't come from wealth. She, too, on the other hand, came from a working-class background. Nancy Kerrigan's father, a welder, had to work 2 or 3 jobs to support Nancy's skating lessons, not to mention himself and the rest of the family. Nancy Kerrigan was the one who was injured here. ';;
Tonya Harding is a self-centered, lying, egotistical, hedonistic, arrogant mess.
Hey, listen, HarvardBarbie:
In the first place, I'm a woman.
In the second place, I did write the posts, but I had the right to.
In the third place, your comment "Maybe he's the guy that got beaned with the hubcap" wasn't funny..it was quite retarded. Go fuck yourself.
I stand by everything I've said, Jehosaphet. Tonya Harding is a consummate liar, and she's always quick to blame other people for the stupidities that she's performed. She thinks she's innocent, and she's not. I don't have sympathy for her, and neither do most people, because she doesn't deserve it.
To be truthful, Jehosaphet, you're not being very objective, either, because your opinion isn't that informed. She definitely did play a role in the masterminding and planning of the nasty attack on Nancy Kerrigan..that's true.
"People refusing information on account of thinking they know what they know...can you think of anything that's been much more harmful to humanity than that? That kind of hubris?"
"Why do you hate humanity?"
Here's a suggestion, Jehosaphet: Go and fuck yourself.
Thank you, BillHicksFan.
Who knows?
The Middle East, as a region, is almost totally Muslim, but I'm really not sure where the belly dancer tradition does come in.
Thank you, andreaahr! Happy New Year!
"Goodfellas" and "Platoon" were good ones! I never did see "Conan the Barbarian", however.
I've seen "The Goonies", which was a lot of fun, and "Raiders of the Lost Ark", as well.
Thanks, MovieManCin2! Happy New Year to you, too!
Wow!! I've never even heard of any of these films, let alone seen any of them. They sound interesting, though.
Those sound like interesting pieces of advice, but would they apply to people who live in apartments buildings, like I do? Just curious. I live on the 4th story of a 5-story building, so I'm just wondering.
The not lowering the heat at night sounds like a good piece of advice, regardless of whether one lives in a house or an apartment building.
Here's some other advice to add to the list: Anybody who has any air conditioner(s) permanently installed in their windows should cover them, and either put a plastic bag over the A/C before covering it, put some newspaper on the underpart of the A/C if there's room on the window sill, and/or to also tape some newspaper over the cover. Unplugging the air conditioner for the winter months also helps.
When going out in extreme cold weather, wear 2 or more pants layers, mittens instead of gloves, a hat or a hood, and a scarf to cover the neck, and nose and mouth, especially if you're an asthmatic. Turn the heat up in your car as much as your comfortable with, as well. Do not warm up the car after starting it and before venturing out in the cold weather in it. That doesn't help at all.
If you have pets, keep them warm at night, also, and during the day if and when you take them for a walk. If you have exotic birds for pets, make sure they're covered with a thick quilted cover, or at least an extra blanket or something beside what you've got in the way of a cage cover.
Thank you, ShogunofYonkers.
What are some of your favorite films? A curious, inquiring mind wants to know.
"Reservoir Dogs" was a good film.
"There Will Be Blood" and "The Seventh Seal" were good films. I never saw any off the other films that you listed, however.
With the exception of "Chariots of Fire", I never saw any of the movies that you've listed. "Chariots of Fire" was definitely a good one.
Thanks, godewey.
It was an interesting evening. I'd never seen belly dancers before but it was fun to watch them. Since it was quite a cold night, and was supposed to go down even lower (the temperature, that is.), it was good that I left a little after ten.
At around midnight, people and things begin getting somewhat weird, generally.
I attended a New Years Eve banquet at a restaurant in Cambridge's Central Square called 'The Middle East". It was a good Lebanese food buffet, with baklava for dessert..no drinks for me, however, since it was way too cold. Saw some belly-dancing, which was interesting, as well. Not something I'd want to repeat, however.
I left shortly after ten p. m. however, first because I wanted to leave before it got too cold, and secondly, I don't like walking by myself in that particular area late at night (or anywhere, for that matter), even though I was parked only a couple of blocks away, because the area gets kind of sketchy at that hours.
It was an okay evening, however. Frankly, I think staying 'til midnight or after is overrated.
Having been born in the early 1950's, and a teenager during the 1960's, there were some movies and rock groups of 1970 that I liked rather well myself:
Movies:
Mash
Catch 22
Gimme Shelter
Garden of the Finzi-Continis (although this was an extremely sad movie)
Ryan's Daughter
Little Big Man.
As for "Woodstock", I felt that this film wasn't honest enough; There was quite a bit of violence, many sexual assaults that went unreported, as was prone to happen during those days, there were many bad drug trips, and at least three people died; One from a burst appendix, one from getting run over by a tractor truck as he was sleeping in his sleeping bag to get out of the rain, one or two heroin overdoses, and another due to falling off the scaffold. All of that was deliberately cut out when the original 1969 "Woodstock" was made into a movie.
"Gimme Shelter", on the other hand, was much more honest, because, imho, it was a more rounded-out, accurate portrayal of what really and truly went on during rock concerts during that period.
Rock Groups:
Beach Boys
Steppenwolf
Simon & Garfunkel
Three Dog Night
The Doors
Joni Mitchell
Cat Stevens
Elton John
The Who
Rolling Stones
Neil Young
James Taylor
CCR
(the Beatles of the mid-1960's)
Yup. Glen Campbell was pretty good. Too bad he got Alzheimers disease and passed on. I have to admit that his politics were way too far to the right for my tastes, but I enjoyed listening to his music, and he was very handsome, back in his younger days.
You've made some good points, TexasJack, and you're more than likely correct when you say that the extremists, regardless of their political/social bend(s) are a minority. Unfortunately, however, extremists don't have to be in the majority to present a problem.
Often enough, when enough people feel disenfranchised, desperate, deliberately ignored and/or overlooked, or have lost hope, the more radical, extreme elements in their flanks are allowed to take center stage.
Texting/talking on one's cell phone in the movie theatre during a movie that people often pay good money to come and see is disruptive, rude, and unfair to the people in the movie theatre who truly wish to see and enjoy the movie in question with distractions like cellphone use in the theatre. The small, bright lights of a cellphone are very distracting.
All of the above having been said, if people are going to text and talk on their cellphones, they should either talk/text on their cellphones while they're at home, or in an office booth, where they can't interfere with other people's right to watch a movie in a movie theatre that they paid good money to come and see, without distractions like that, and for other people to be safe on the roads, and not put in danger by people who insist in talking/texting on their cellphones while driving
As for texting/talking on cellphones in movie theatres, Alamo Drafthouse has the right idea; If an offender persists on texting/talking on their cellphone in the movie theatre, or using it as a flashlight, after two warnings, the offender(s) are promptly booted out of the movie theatre, with no refunds of their money. If more movie theatres did that, maybe more people would come back to the movie theatres to see movies as they're really meant to be viewed.
