Jamie Foxx's character was a murderous sociopath who was almost certainly planning on killing Baby after the job was done. It had nothing to do with race and everything to do with Baby protecting himself and others.

Baby Driver is an excellent film, expertly directed and edited with terrific performances across the board. The critical response is perfectly reasonable.
