They'll just retcon it...or something. ;-) I don't care about any of them, so too bad for your attempt at a "comeback." The Middle East is the most Godless place on Earth, which makes it being "The Holy Land" wholly ironic. By the way, why don't you actually look up what it means to be "Semitic." It isn't what you think it is. They're just going with the standard "Damaged Hero" trope. That they randomly killed off the Big Bad? Okay. :-) Hey, I had a lot of fun with it. And, with Disney running things, I am just glad for that. A finer fish you could never meet. :-) OG IMDb'er here! :-) I am SO thankful that MovieChat.org is here. :-) Thanks for making it happen, folks! There is going to likely be a difference between your initial reaction and what you think after some time, and seeing the movie again. I am seeing it again in IMAX 3D in eight days, and will know better then what I think. Now, when a movie just knocks you over, like "Die Hard" or "Aliens," you know, and you know right away. Same goes for when something is awful. But, the movies in between are tougher to pin down. That's why it's classified at Science-Fiction/FANTASY. As soon as you get into The Force, swordplay, knights, princesses, and so forth, you are moving into Lord of the Rings, etc. territory. Oh yeah! Definitely. Not everyone. The established critics are just that. But, the young bucks who are trying to move their way up the ladder are much more likely to do whatever they have to so they can get ahead. Most certainly a take-with-a-grain-of-salt situation, or even take-it-with-a-full-container-of-salt one. And then, they throw his ashes into the wind...and they blow right back into their faces. :-) I almost leapt out of my chair at that one! When you see he's been cut in half and just goes THUNK! It was great! Especially since he had gone into his "Return of the Jedi" throwback "Your fleet is lost, there is no hope, come to the Dark Side" blathering. I kind of think that Johnson did that on purpose, so that, we got even more caught off guard by his departure. Went to the 7 p.m. IMAX showing in Memphis. We FINALLY got our first IMAX that shows theatrical films. We used to have one that showed the short-form docs. But, they went to RealD 3D a few years ago. So, it was fun to go to both a new "Star Wars" and the first-ever showing in our new IMAX auditorium. We even have a corner entrance with twin blue-illuminated entries, and large IMAX-lit badging in the auditorium. It was pretty sweet! Okay, now on to your questions :-) The crowds for the 7 p.m. showings at the IMAX and standard auditoriums were NOTHING compared to those for the 10:00 p.m. or so showings. It. was. packed! My wife and I were having to press through the crowds, trying to find a way out. Trailers: No Peter Jackson's "Mortal Engines," which I was told was supposed to be shown. But, we did get: "Incredibles 2" teaser (which was the audience favorite), "Infinity War," "Ready Player One," and some others. I just was ready for the movie to start! :-) There was applause and surprised laughter at some of the big moments. And, of those still in the auditorium, applause especially for Carrie in the cast listing and in her "In Memory of" title. I never thought of Luke as being someone who would run away. The whole point was that he was different from the others who failed at stopping the Sith. He would have stayed in the fight. Lucas had proposed his vision for a new trilogy, and was dismissed. He was going to have a new set of characters, and allow the original trilogy characters to stay as they were when "Return of the Jedi" came to an end. Much better choice, in my opinion. It's been a letdown with killing off Han pretty randomly. At least Luke got to have a certain poetry to his exit. And now, Carrie is gone, and she won't even have a chance at any exit, except to be gone. The answer is simple as to why the original characters were brought back: Money. Disney had paid their $4 billion, and were going to get every penny back and more. I think that, if you have a payoff that is as fun as this one was, you are less likely to worry about the practicality of the scenario. Of course, we're talking about sci-fi/fantasy "practicality." I had the same questions. But, the reveal was so much fun, punctuated by Johnson's enjoyable "See ya later, kid" dialogue, it didn't bother me. The Leia-in-space bit brought about questions that overtook any emotional or whatever aspect of that one. That's why that one didn't work for me. The movie's pretty scattershot. Doesn't seem like a movie written and directed by Philip Kaufman. The story wanders, and the cinematography seems more TV style than cinematic. Shots are soft and out of focus, and the framing is kind of point-and-shoot instead of something an established DP like Surtees would have done. And, yeah, I can imagine how completely off the "accuracy" of the storytelling is. Even if "The Long Riders" was highly inaccurate, the far lesser amount of time it spent on this robbery was at least 100% better done. Agreed. Pretty dumb. You get that they wanted to make an allusion to "Death on the Nile." But, they clearly did not think it out. They could have just done it as a joke, which would have been good to cheer up the downbeat mood at the film's end. "I need to go somewhere where I can relax and there are no murders." "How about a cruise on the Nile?" :-) Everyone is more than welcome to go out on the streets and be a beat cop. Get yelled at, be threatened, be attacked, and still keep your head at all times. Yes, there are definitely bad cops out there. And, those that screw up should be taken off the force and prosecuted for any crimes that they commit. But, acting like every cop is evil and has to be hated doesn't accomplish anything. It's interesting that, with all the full-frontal nudity, it was rated GP (forerunner of MPAA's PG). Humans are sheep. That is why Catholic parents feed their children to child-raping priests, etc. Humans are humans, whether good or evil. Supposedly representing God makes them no different. In fact, when people have somehow convinced themselves that they are "in" with God, that only has the potential to drive them to more evil.
