You watched some great movies this week. I love A Room with a View. Daniel Day Lewis is such a chameleon and he's a perfect Cecil. Helena Bonham Carter was so beautiful in that movie. Maggie Smith and Judy Dench are delightful to watch. I just rewatched The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. It's such a good movie. Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne and Lee Marvin! Lee Marvin is so evil in this, with the whip! Heathers is such a great movie. Christian Slater is incredible in this. Preacher Season 1 was very good. I haven't finished watching season 2 yet, so I'm not sure yet if it holds up. Ruth Negga is excellent in that show. Dominic Cooper is a perfect Preacher but my favorite is definitely Joe Gilgun as Cassidy. Thanks! I'm happy to join! I wrote something on the page I'm not sure how you discuss he movie so I just put whatever came to mind. I loved the clothes in this movie. George C Scott plays a composer so he gets to wear a rust colored corduroy jacket with leather elbow patches- the professor look. Trisha Van Devere wears this beautiful formal dress that has a spiderweb lace inset for a scene at the opera. Anyway, the late seventies and the forties are the best fashion decades, in my opinion, so I really liked he way this movie looks. The house that they used is ideal, the woodwork is so beautiful. The story is simple, as godewey said above, but it's good. There are some parts that I think were in there because it was a trendy topic at the time, but seem pretty far fetched to me in 2017. The whole séance scene is a kind of wacky but I know that it was sort of a popular belief back then. It's a supernatural movie so you have to suspend disbelief. My favorite part of the movie- it has Melvyn Douglas! It's a pleasure to watch him in anything, his part was too small but he's a legend. He still had that great voice. Also there was Madeline Sherwood. I've always liked her a lot (by the way, she was blacklisted) and she was also only in the movie for a short time but at least we got a couple of scenes with a terrific actor. SPOILER: I thought it was kind of unfair that the Senator had to die. He had nothing to do with the death of the real Joseph Carmichael. It seemed like he genuinely loved his murderer father but the ghost wanted revenge? That doesn't seem fair. Thanks Mina! I'll go to that page. I'd like to join you. Do we discuss the movie on its title page? I agree with you exactly. If I had a gun to my head and had to save only one decade's movies, I'd pick the 70s. Chinatown, Five Easy Pieces and Prizzi's Honor are probably my very favorites but there are so many great movies in that list. I'm the same as nearly everyone above, I don't like any kind of animal cruelty or child abuse. I know it's a reality but it's hard to watch it. Also, for me, any kind of rape scene is brutal. I'm a woman and I know that's all too common. I saw it. I liked It a lot. It reminded me of the scary movies I grew up on. Some blood and guts but not gruesome. The actors are terrific. You're almost right. There were five people in the theater last night! I kept waiting for it to get better but no such luck. I remember a story from Lillian Gish about Lionel Barrymore. Their first movie together, she played his daughter. Then in a later movie she played his wife and finally she played his mother! Yes, I remember that line too. I felt very sad for the younger brother. The other men were "hard", especially the really mean guy, the one that killed the garbage man. I recognized that actor but I don't know his name. He was excellent in this as an evil man. I remember him mostly playing a family man in movies. I've sent a PM but I don't know if the person ever received it. I've never received one myself. Maybe I'll sign out/sign in and see if that changes anything. Thanks! Does PM mean personal message? If so, no I haven't. I started watching the movie, The Changeling. I've heard of it but I've never seen it. George C Scott! Love him. I like the setting so far too, a big house in Washington. I love the clothes in the movie too. So I'll join you for the discussion. Thank you very much for the invite, I appreciate it! No worries. I'm very leery of anything political on this forum. I don't mean to offend and don't want to get into anything that even seems remotely political. I wish there were a spot on the internet where it felt safe but so far I haven't found it. It would be nice to hear a intelligent conversation without personal insults. Elia Kazan made some movies I love. My parents were both immigrants so America, America has always been special to me. On the Waterfront is a masterpiece. A Streetcar Named Desire is phenomenal. I'm a big fan but he wasn't very friendly in the interview. It's another reinforcement of that adage don't meet your hero. Apparently, Sam Shepard was a drunk *sshole who didn't like picking up dog poop. Who knew? To me, he was an amazing writer who seemed to have a great deal of empathy for people. Everyone is human. I don't want to get into a thing about the blacklist and Elia Kazan. I'm not able to judge his behavior. I don't know what I would have done. What I was referring to above was the tone he had throughout the interview, not just in speaking about the blacklist. Let me just say, I don't think he was an easy going kind of guy. A bit too spicy for my taste. Same here. I've only seen it once, when it first came out. I've never rewatched it. They Shoot Horses, Don't They is one I've never seen. I have heard of it but I never come across it. Margo! I completely forgot about Leaving Las Vegas. That was an excellent movie. I really should look at his filmography before I'm making a statement. I did see one action movie that was fairly recent where he played an arms dealer. It was very good. I'm not much of an action movie fan but a good movie in any genre is a good movie so I've seen some that I've really liked. My big beef with action movies is how crazy the plot lines are. I can't follow them too well. There are too many things going on.But I guess that's why they're called action movies. He was so good in Kiss of the Spiderwoman and Presumed Innocent.
