Actors that were way too good for the movies they were in.

I got the idea from the bar on the bottom where they want you to click.
If you see it, don't cheat and look. Think of some of your own
There are loads, but at this moment I draw a blank....
I will have to think this over. Feel free to come up with some.....

I have to agree.
I'm thinking of some of Joan Crawford's last movies..... She just wanted to work. Trog was her last one. It was a horrible movie. The poor woman used a car as her dressing room.

reply

When you asked this question, Joan Crawford immediately came to mind, just as you thought. Great question!

reply

Milla Jovovich in the fourth kind...she always makes good performance even that the script is bad..

reply

Michael Caine. He started out well enough, but then started accepting parts in loads of terrible movies.

Nicolas Cage. I realise several people here dislike him, and I'd agree the quality of the films he's played in has gone down considerably. But back when, he gave a number of excellent performances.

reply

You're are so right about Nicholas Cage. He's not my favorite but he has given some very fine performances. Valley Girl, Birdie, Face-Off, Moonstruck, are all excellent movies.

reply

I thought he was just great in Raising Arizona.

reply

Oh yes! I forgot about that movie. He was great in that.

reply

I just saw it about a week ago. I remember thinking that he was so funny in that. He really is good in some of the earlier comedies.
I thought he was fantastic in Leaving Las Vegas..... of course he won the Oscar for that, so I guess I'm not alone.
I think so many of those action movies were dumb though.

reply

Margo! I completely forgot about Leaving Las Vegas. That was an excellent movie. I really should look at his filmography before I'm making a statement. I did see one action movie that was fairly recent where he played an arms dealer. It was very good. I'm not much of an action movie fan but a good movie in any genre is a good movie so I've seen some that I've really liked. My big beef with action movies is how crazy the plot lines are. I can't follow them too well. There are too many things going on.But I guess that's why they're called action movies.

reply

Leaving Las Vegas is a movie I can only watch once in a great while....
Too depressing. It's the same with They Shoot Horses, Don't They? It sort of stays with you for days after you watch it.

reply

Same here. I've only seen it once, when it first came out. I've never rewatched it. They Shoot Horses, Don't They is one I've never seen. I have heard of it but I never come across it.

reply

I have that one. It takes place at a 1930's dance marathon. It's a very compelling story. You'll have to see it sometime.

reply

Nicolas Cage was my first thought when I saw the thread title. He's actually a good actor when he's given the chance to be, but his financial situation is so bad he just has to take whatever role he can get, and so in the public mind he becomes the guy who does bad movies. He deserves better, honestly.

reply

Hm, I didn't know he was in a bad financial situation that's caused him to take any part he can get. That explains why he's been in many crappy movies over the past decade.

Leaving Las Vegas isn't one of my favourites of his, although he did give a great performance in it.

Did you ever see Face/Off? I've loved his quirky characterisations in a number of films, but for pure dramatic chops, he was outstanding in it. One unforgettable scene in particular.

reply

You know what, despite the crappy movies he's in recently, I still enjoy Cage's antics in those movies. The guy is very watchable.

reply

Honestly, I haven't seen his new crappy movies, so I only remember him from his earlier good, non-crappy movies :)

reply

Ben Kingsley has had some great roles.
He has also made some horrible movies.

reply

Most notably in Iron Man 3.

He's way too good to be doing some of the movies he's been in.
He's Gandhi for cryin out loud.

reply

Did you ever see Searching for Bobby Fischer? He's great in that, and it's an incredibly great movie.

reply

It was a great movie and he was.
Great in all of these..

Lucky Number Slevin
Sexy Beast
Schindler's List
Photographing Fairies

There was one he did with Johnny Depp a few years ago I think. It was so bad.

reply

Raul Julia in Street Fighter The Movie

reply

He was so good in Kiss of the Spiderwoman and Presumed Innocent.

reply
