Cherry Pie by Warrant. Their most popular song, by far. Defines their image. And it just doesn't sound anything like their other stuff. Yup. I have a friend who drives for them. Started as a package handler in the warehouse. They streamlined the hiring process during the pandemic; all online, no interview. Basically just a background check. Probably not a bad option for someone struggling to establish a work history. 2 catches: 1-It's tough labor. I hear a lot of this & think people exaggerate. But there's really only 1 way to tell if you're up to the job; give it a shot. 2-They won't always have hours for you. It's basically a chance for workers to prove they're reliable before they can be offered an actual career. MLK? Absolutely not. Ali? https://www.nytimes.com/1984/10/03/us/campaign-notes-muhammad-ali-switches-his-support-to-reagan.html I don't buy this. It made her seem edgy, which was a huge plus in a scene dominated by gangster rap & grunge. People were more turned off that she remained religious. Being easy on the eyes helps with that. Also explains her fading popularity with age. Will say that Emperor's New Clothes was a solid pop song. Haven't seen it but Ken seems like a 'bizzaro' version of atomic age housewives. A revenge fantasy for the 2nd wave feminists who took over the Barbie brand. I doubt the point is that Ken gets what he deserves. This was a thing, yes. OTOH there was a type of straight man who defied convention & wore an earring in that ear. The point was to signal his status as a guy who "got enough" that he didn't have to worry about it. Like Harry Styles in a dress. Feta is an underrated topping. It is easier to top the charts these days. Less people are buying albums. Fair enough. But nostalgia has always sold well. Just looked up the 1988 charts & the Beach Boys were making a comeback with Kokomo. Tiffany made a name for herself with a Tommy James song. Steve Winwood was biting off Holland-Dozier-Holland. There's a mashup of Baby I Love Your Way & Freebird. Neil Diamond got a reggae makeover. I'd even argue that Michael Jackson was still riding a wave of goodwill from his Jackson 5 days. Bad still would've sold, regardless. The appeal just wouldn't have been so broad. This sounds right. I saw Phantom Menace in theaters & was impressed enough to give Attack of the Clones a shot, too. Was bored out of my gourd by the massive fight scene between the robots & clones. Still haven't even bothered with the 3rd movie. I Can't Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt started playing on the radio during my first time getting dumped. It's a sad song but its sincerity somehow made it less sad, if that makes sense. Believe by Cher, OTOH, completely bums me out. Delusional cope. You're right that it shouldn't matter. Polynesians are king in rugby. Nordics in hockey. Indians in Cricket. Turkics in wrestling. Most people are fair enough to attribute these disparities to tradition. It's lazy & unhelpful but playing up (certain) disparities is a good way to gain to clout in America. A lot of it is just counting guys like David Ortiz as "Hispanic" instead of "black". On a less cynical note, there's also a growth of East Asian players in MLB. Saw a figure at something like 10% and growing. That's good for the game. New Lovecraft adaptation, IIRC. Can't stand Reddit & am surprised to hear he's popular on there. Subversive use of "wholesome" to describe anything degenerate is peak Reddit IMO. Conan was too repressed for that. My biggest complaint was that he leaned too much on self-deprecating humor. But aside from Carson, name a better talk show host. Letterman was too much of a grouch. Stewart became a political scold. Maher can be a bore. Leno was milquetoast. Cavett had his moments but was dry. I'm not into horror but when you brought up Unsolved Mysteries, it reminded me of a 70s move called Black Christmas. American women watch procedurals. I was surprised to learn that primetime, broadcast TV shows are made more with women in mind than men. https://www.nexttv.com/news/women-viewers-continue-rule-broadcast-primetime-114370 Men, OTOH, basically watch sports and Sunday night FOX cartoons. Friday Night Lights was "sports-y" enough to appeal to male audiences. IRL I know a lot of men who liked the show. Other thing is that the show was interrupted by a writer's strike: https://www.washingtonpost.com/arts-entertainment/2023/03/23/hollywood-strike-friday-night-lights/ Haven't seen most on your list but Nacho Libre & Scary Movie are among my favorite comedies from this era. White Chicks gets a ton of hate but I love the Wayans Bros. I'd add: -Mean Girls -Tropic Thunder -Team America: World Police -Hot Rod -Juno I also have a soft spot for Employee of the Month. I only wish Dane Cook leaned more into the absurd like Dax Shepard. Santino's cover of Kiss You All Over, the "new-ish" Chevy Malibu, the clubhouse, Harland Williams. More stuff like that would've made it memorable. Less of a poor man's Office Space. I use a 50/50 water/vinegar solution to wipe down my toilet. Do so daily, right before jumping in the shower. It's not the best disinfectant. Still like to use bleach once a month for that. But vinegar's nice because I can keep it in a small spray bottle by the toilet & have it always ready. Bleach would break down & destroy the bottle. She's right that vinegar works well on hardwater stains. I use TP to wipe the toilet & the residual vinegar just from that keeps the bowl clear of stains. Most of the men in her life were closet cases, including her dad & multiple husbands. And she was rumored to have performed in gay clubs. Subtle stuff. But for the 60s, pretty unusual.
