Why is she a gay diva?

I don't mean she's gay. I mean she's legendary among gay males.

I mean I'm too young to have listened to her music.

I saw her in Wizard of Oz but that's about it.

I asked my mother about this when I was a kid and she told me Judy Garland was a "freak". The reference seemed to be to her bizarre stage performances.

I dunno, can someone explain?

reply

Most of the men in her life were closet cases, including her dad & multiple husbands. And she was rumored to have performed in gay clubs. Subtle stuff. But for the 60s, pretty unusual.

In the movie "Judy" during her lean years in the late 60's, she was performing gay clubs, it has been enough stated in other sources as well.

Explain which part? Her being a gay diva or your mother — who seems to have issues — thinking her performances were freakish.

reply

Both. The two are related. Not that my mother had any idea that Garland was a diva in the gay community. She didn't know of such things.

But gay males gravitate toward the outre, the cutting edge in entertainment.

I'm asking what about Garland's stage performances could be called out of the norm, even avant-garde?

WHY was she popular among gay males?

reply

"I'm too young to have listened to her music."

That's why she was recorded on disks, tape, and film. You can hear her music at any time. You didn't have to be there sixty or eighty years ago when she was actually doing it.

reply

Okay, I'm not sure why people are getting snarky.

It's a genuine question. Garland has a reputation of being popular among gay males.

Before gay lib there was a code among gay males "Are you a friend of Dorothy?" meaning "Are you gay"?

I'm honestly asking if anyone can tell me what it is about Garland's music or her career which made her popular in the gay community?
