Is it just me or...
Did Denzel just not fit the time period? He seemed too modern and didn't even try an accent. Haha. He did great as always but just didn't seem to fit. Overall the movie was just ok.

sharei agree
shareYes, I agree as well. He has great screen presence....but he felt shoehorned in this movie, like they needed a big name.
I'm sure part of it is simply...you can't avoid thinking: "That's Denzel the movie star" up there on screen, instead of getting invested in the character he's playing. But yes, also he simply comes across as being almost modern day in a lot of his dialogue. A strong and consistent accent may have helped.
Yes! You explained it well.
shareIs it just me or….
-is Rome anywhere? This doesn’t feel like we’re close to Rome? Exteriors or interiors.
-Did the “twins” look like Prince Harry and Prince William.
-Notice that there was NOT one Italian actor.
-That the writing was horrible.
-Performances mediocre.
-That Paul’s finale speech sounded like My Way.
“For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way.”
My point is Denzel’s performance is the strongest one and that is not saying much. There are too many other criticisms that could be made about this movie. Especially the writing. Denzel did have an accent. So did Joaquin. And neither was British. Connie’s accent isn’t British either. So maybe they don’t fit as well.
If they were being historically accurate, most of the characters would be speaking latin.
shareI heard some reviewers say that he basically plays his character from American Gangster. They also say that his American accent was distracting when everyone else spoke British
shareAre you saying that an actor who plays the same role in every movie is phoning it in?
shareWhat does "too modern" even mean?
shareIt means his dialect sounds like how people speak today in modern times, rather than an old world dialect and accent like the other actors were at least attempting to use. He just sounded like a modern day Denzel Washington, talking to TMZ....rather than a retired gladiator in ancient Rome.
shareIt's not just you.
Denzel is a fantastic actor with great screen presence, but he is too much present-day American to play a Roman.
I thought the same thing when I watched The Last Duel, coincidentally also by Ridley Scott. Matt Damon as a French medieval knight I could buy. Ben Affleck I just couldn't.
Are you British?
shareNo, why?
Because I thought maybe you couldn’t hear the affected accent Denzel had and thought it was American. Joaquin also had an affected accent. We don’t talk like that. Connie’s is Danish. There are several who have Irish accents. When I first saw the original, I thought the same as you only I thought too many people were British. No Italians. (In the manner of Suburra Blood on Rome.) But then I saw HBO Rome series and everyone was British and it all worked in that series. But that series was phenomenal. Everything worked. Why is a British accent the one to have in a Roman drama? Because of Shakespeare. And it’s not only that, most of the cast were speaking in such a manner that was so stilted and cadenced and breathy that even if it were Oliver Reed and Richard Harris, it was noticeably fabricated and interfered with the drama. Not to mention the script was rubbish as Crowe constantly mentioned.
Adam Driver was the only one I liked in The Last Duel. He looked like he should be there. Damon did not. I felt something similar to what you felt when I saw Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - everybody had some kind of Scandi accent except Daniel Craig. And that was British. I thought Denzel not only fit, he was the most compelling, certainly not the over-the-top Twins. You could actually say, and be correct, nobody fits in this thing because it all was so bad riding on the coattails of the first movie which like a thunderbolt you now realize was all because of Russell Crowe.
