How is it woke?

A few people have been saying it's a woke mess. I saw the first ep, and didn't get any sort of woke vibe...

Also, kind of sad to hear old Sir Patrick sound like he's having a boxing match with his old man jowels. Lol

Also, they couldn't have done a better job hiding Spiner's age with today's tech? Data looked horrible!

reply

Data is an android who was fashioned to appear to be a man in his thirties. Unfortunately, Brent Spiner is seventy, and his age cannot be hidden with makeup.

reply

Granted, when Data returns, there will quickly be dialogue in which he states that he chooses to mimic the age of his friends, allowing for an older looking Data.

reply

"dialogue in which he states that he chooses to mimic the age of his friends, allowing for an older looking Data."

I think that's the best way to account for his appearance of age, rather than trying to fix it with CGI, but CGI could work, too.

reply

It could be hidden with CGI though.

reply

Please no! Most CGI is bad.

reply

That didn't work in The Irishman

reply

It didn't work in Aquaman neither.

reply

i wonder if the head was the original prop from the series?

reply

There isn't much to go on with the pilot, but we'll see.

reply

Plus, they chose an African-American female to be the useless, bitchy interviewer who treated Picard with complete disrespect. Doesn't sound woke.

reply

I detected no wokeness either thank god.

Data's look was ok, but they could easily have made him look his original age. Obviously they made this choice for some reason.

Or would Data 'age' a bit? Either by design or natural wear and tear.

reply

Considering Data is just a damn dream, I didn't see why he couldn't look old and different. Why wouldn't old man Picard dream of an old Data to comfort him? Hardly a stretch.

reply

Only thing I noticed was that Spiner has gained a few pounds. Other than that he looked pretty good as dream Data.

reply

I think you wokeness alarm is off.

reply

The woke-ness was very light and but for current culture I wouldn't have even noticed it. I was far more annoyed by the use of the word "dude".

reply

The wokeness came from the Federation having some sort of Fox News and anti-refugee politics. This crap doesn't belong in Star Trek.

reply

Yes, it does. Star Trek was all about social issues and commentary when it premiered in the 60s.

reply

Exactly. So weird seeing Star Trek fans, of all people, complain about it being “woke”, “sjw”, or too political etc..
The same people would’ve absolutely hated the Original Star Trek & everything it stood for...

reply

Star Trek was all about social issues and commentary. Sure. But it was always told through metaphor and Aliens. Not the human. Human in Star Trek were suppose to be above that bitter shit. The fact the Federation has become Trump America. Is very lazy and ruin what Star Trek is about (aka optimism). But im taking to a Dumbass who dosn't get Star Trek.

reply

"Not the human."
The Federation was supposed to be utopian and humans on Earth finally solved problems like war, poverty, hunger, and bigotry which was amplified during the 60s social movements. The crew represented an idealistic worldview with a multicultural cast and even a Russian which meant the Cold War era had ended.

Trumpism can be in Trek, but not within The Federation. Studios have been ruining Trek for years.

reply

Other than the presence of Romulan refugees, which is certainly a reference to the waves of immigration into Western Europe and North America, I didn't see anything excessive "woke" either.

reply

Didn't strike me as woke either.

The hammering its getting from some of the usual suspects on Youtube, can't take them seriously, at this point they just want to get them sweet likes and subs.

For a first episode, I quite liked it, I just wish they didn't make Picard seem so old and fragile, he's lost some of his sterness and directness, maybe they will return when he is running a ship again, I hope so at least.

reply

Yeah I know, he's verging on the infirm and senile. Maybe he's like that in real life?
