Getting a bad feeling about this series...

Lucasfilm was unhappy with the scripts, the reasoning behind the pause was a little more layered. According to sources, Chow showed the scripts to Star Wars stewards Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, who were coming off the success of The Mandalorian, freshly launched in November 2019, and deep into work on season two.

Sources note that Filoni and Favreau were concerned about Obi-Wan covering similar ground as Mandalorian — the Lone Wolf and Cub-like story of Kenobi coming out of hiding to protect a child-aged Luke Skywalker. Maul was one of the villains who would participate in the hunt for the pair; Vader was nowhere to be found in this faraway galaxy at this stage, according to those with knowledge of the project. Also, Filoni and Favreau pushed Chow and the show to “go bigger,” according to several sources. In any case, those concerns made their way to Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy, who pressed the pause button. (Joby Harold was eventually hired as the show’s new writer.)

It is unclear how far along in the process things initially unraveled. A boy was chosen to play young Skywalker, but no scenes with him were shot. As far as Park’s Maul goes, the picture is more cloudy. One source says Park was on set for preproduction and was also involved in stunt training. The source says footage of Park may have been shot, although another source says it could have been test footage. Whatever the case, Park was back as Maul, or so he believed.

In the overhaul, however, Maul was written out. One source says it was Filoni that conceptually keyed in on a way for Vader to be brought back as the big bad, with the Grand Inquisitor, a character made popular by Filoni in the animated series Star Wars Rebels, also put into the story.

A Lucasfilm source contradicted the account, saying Maul was never intended to return for the series, nor did Park come to set.

The overhaul also led to a new search for a young Skywalker, and a new actor was picked. THR has learned the new Luke is Grant Feely, whose only credit, according to IMDb, is an episode of Creepshow.

Hope I am wrong about it but the fact they overhauled it spells bad signs. They written Darth Maul out and recasted young Luke Skywalker as well.

Filoni's obsession with is cartoon world annoys me. He thinks it's on par with the movies and just can't stop inserting his characters into the live action stuff.

reply

Yeah, agreed. I could never watch the cartoons for some reason. Probably to do with the animation or the way the characters were drawn. Just felt too kiddish in a way even though I do like watching cartoons in general.

reply

The animation blows. It's childish. I hated how the lightsaber fights were all this swinging and twirling, but their lower body barely moves.

Also, Anakin never had an apprentice and he and Dooku never fought more than twice. Cartoon bullshit.

reply

Im not sure of Chows writing talent but she is an excellent director.

reply

As you should. It's rushed Disney crap.

reply

have you seen the acting in obiwan? she's definitely not an execellent director.

reply

Did I see Obi wan 3 months ago? Nope, but have I seen it now, and yes I am really underwhelmed with the story, acting and some of the cast - the aesthetic is great but teh Inquisitors look weird to me.

reply

I won't have a feeling about this series other than hopefulness, until I start to see trailers and then episodes. It's possible to make a good Star Wars series, that's all I can say at this point.

That said, I think making Luke a major character isn't a great approach, because it's canon that they're strangers when they meet in "ANH". So that means they can't have met since Luke was a small child, not much older than Grogu appears to be, and really, TWO Star Wars shows centered around a cute little kid?

Personally, I think they should make it about Obi-Wan's part in the founding of the Rebellion, which is something that I think he participated in, while keeping half an eye on the Lars Moisture Farm.

Were they? I thought Luke knew of Kenobi and called him "Ben", but wasn't really too familiar with him because Kenobi kept his distance? I got the feeling they only ever occasionally met when necessary but otherwise Kenobi kept his distance and observed from afar.

reply

New Hope is pretty clear they know each other, but not well. When 3PO tells Luke that R2 is claiming to be the property of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke's mind immediately goes to Ben. He asks his uncle about it.

When Obi-Wan rescues Luke from the Sand People, and Luke regains consciousness, he immediately recognizes Ben. There is no dialogue of "who are you?" or "are you Ben?"

They are not intimate acquaintances, but they are familiar with each other.

Yeah, I always had the feeling Luke and Obi Wan knew each other before ANH when I first saw them meet.

It would not surprise me if they simply ran into each other in Anchorhead.

reply

Is Luke a major character? I hadn't heard that.

I'm just curious, which movies and shows do you like?

reply

Oh, before the show premiered, there was fan speculation that Luke would be a major character. Some of the posts on this thread are months old.

The kid may yet turn out to be a major character, but I'm okay if Leia is and Luke isn't. ANH shows Luke vaguely knowing who Kenobi is, but Leia calls on him for help, so presumably she's the one who had more of a pre-existing relationship with him.

reply

No shit. I didn't know that. Yeah, that would be a mistake. Hell, making Leia too prominent would be a mistake too, but if she never sees Kenobi again after this, I am fine with that.

reply

I do rather hope that this isn't going to be just the Obi-Wan and Leia show, that he's able to get her home fairly quickly and the story expands from there. Because well, they've already done the man-stuck-with-a-child show!

reply

I'm very concerned. I want to like it, but don't like what I am hearing. The dialogue in A New Hope makes it clear Obi Wan disappeared after the big fight and this trailer shows him planet hopping and there are heavy rumors they're going to fight. This contradicts the OT.

reply

Yep, after May the 4th trailer, we clearly see Vader is coming for the big meet and greet and possibly a short fight scene between ex-master and once apprentice.

reply

I wouldn't mind a vision or some kind of astral projection type thing, but an actual fight between them would contradict A New Hope.

reply

The prequels already contradicted the OT with Leia having memories of ‘her real mother’ which we know from Revenge of the Sith is rubbish because Padme dies in childbirth.

So contradictions don’t bother me at this point seeing as back in 1977 the villains weren’t even known as the Sith (I don’t think the word is used anywhere in the original trilogy)

Heck Obi-Wan in A New Hope calls Vader ‘Darth’ haha.

So if it’s a well made show and is entertaining and just gets away with a few contradictions then I’m all for it. Disney have yet to provide us with a lightsaber duel on par with any of the prequels or the original trilogy so hopefully they step up for this one.

reply

Say what you will about “Force Awakens” but I thought the lightsaber duel in the snow/dark forest with Adam Driver really laying into his swings, was pretty good. Especially in the sense of the original SW movies, back when they acted as if the sabers had weight.

reply

Actually yeah that one is pretty good, I really like the setting for that one as you said in the snow.

reply

It's not rubbish (that Leia didn't know), that's a prequel problem. Nothing wrong with that line in ROTJ, it's the prequels that contradict that.

Calling him Darth is no different than calling someone "Your highness", "Mr. President", or "Senator".

The only prequel that has good lightsaber fights is The Phantom Menace. Every single one from the other two are awful. I'll take any - and all - lightsaber fight from the entire sequel trilogy over anything in AOTC or ROTS. Those movies suck and that includes their lightsaber fights.

reply

Hey, at least they got a woman to run the whole thing. Worked like a charm with Kennedy running Lucasfilm.
