A Film For White People
White people love to see the pain and confusion of Africans.
shareNot at all - I am white - I didn't understand dialogue in a single scene.
I did not get the speech patterns, idioms, terms used.
I have black friends and neighbors = none of them talk like this.
If it was a film for whites, they should have included subtitles, in Standard American English.

Extremely facile argument. What's your explanation of Schindler's List? 'Room' from last year? Pretty much any drama film with human suffering as the subject matter?
I'm always dragging that horse around...
Good.
" Man, created God out of ignorance and fear"
I agree! The only thing that would have made this movie more for me would have been some *beep* hanging from a tree!
shareGood for you.

Bleach your skin and you might have a chance.
Then again your attitude would still be there so at that point you'd just be white trash
LOL you're hopeless!
Oh well have fun being upset all the time.
Meanwhile I have privledge to enjoy.
Toodles! :-)
Awe man that sucks, I love myself too much to do something like that, oh well let me continue living my hopeless life.

i was with you once you mentioned birth of a nation as being a good film for black people. sorry but that movie was total trash made by a rapist director who didn't even do a goood job at directing the damn film. least he was hot though. after watching moonlight i was left stunned by why this movie was so criticaly acclaimed. wasn't a bad film but it certainly wasn't award worthy. i especially don't understand why mahershala ali is nominated for an award.
shareI agree with you about Birth of a Nation not being that good, but I have my reasons for liking it. I love your name by the way.

samf2006:
This was a film made by black people FOR black people. What on earth are you talking about? The director and screenwriters are black. And this is an indie movie that took about 5 years to make, NOT a Hollywood movie. Hollywood would NEVER make a film about a young gay black male growing up in the South in a million years. Get real.
Yes the film was directed and written by two talented brothers, but the film in my opinion was made for the acceptance and appreciation of white folks, hence the overwhelming critical acclaim and the Golden Globe win the other night. Moonlight is a well made piece of art, but it is not for the black/African in America.

You're a conscious brother who knows who he is and I agree with you on this film. Only because of the "gayness" of the lead black actor (which is being pushed by Hollywood) this film was even considered for any awards. I mean the "average" person does not relate to this, let alone the average black person! This is a movie made to satisfy WHITES! Pure and simple. There is nothing "normal" about homosexuality and to praise a film about a strong black man and his apparent struggle with it is no good. It's just evil really. I can't wait for my black people to wake up and realize their true self - strong, smart, industrious and productive. WAKW UP MY BLACK PEOPLE!
shareWAKE UP MY BLACK PEOPLE!

That's true. But, I hope these filmmakers had different intentions.
To me,a white kid growing up in the rural south in the middle of the 20th century wasn't that different from Chiron. We all face challenges, but our own is always worse than the others guy's.
I know it is easy for me to say because I am white and privileged but everyone could be more sympathetic and empathetic.
I realize that being white enabled my ambitions, but not all of us made it.
Thank you for the honesty
shareOfcourse....because every black person wants to watch another movie of *beep* Gangbanging each other in the Hood lmao.
I'm from a mixed White/Jamaican back ground and straight. Loved this movie.
Good for you, I'm glad you connected to the film.
