Moana or Merida (Brave)

.... ok, i cannot decide. When Brave came out. She's my favorite Disney Princess among the past princesses. Now Moana came out, cant help to fall in love with Moana too. Both are strong, skilled and adventurous girls. I am so torn between which I like.waaaaah

Anyway, the reason why i love both of these films is that, it showcases culture and they're strong characters. I think that's important. Love them!!

Moana. Merida is the stereotype of the rebellious, spoiled princess and her relationship with her mom. While Moana was strong-willed and aggressive occasionally and honestly it was annoying, she wasn't being as angsty as Merida was. I was expecting Merida to be more like Moana and entertain me.

Moana all day, at least she tried. Merida was an awful brat.

R.I.P Big sister"

R.I.P Angel, you fought a good fight, I will miss you, I love you.

Merida is definately less likeable. She doesn't really get any sort of come uppance from conspiring to unleash a magic spell on her mother, and her reasons for doing it in the first place come off as teen angst about one's place in the world rather than some existential threat.

Still, I find her an interesting character. I'm not a fan of Chapman airing her dirty laundry about being removed from the project in publicand making insinuations that Pixar is sexist etc., but I can't help thinking if the character didn't suffer somewhat in coherence when the movie was reworked after her departure.

EDIT

To build on why I think she is interesting, you could compare her to Lilo. Lilo too has whiny and bratty scenes, but I think the vast majority of the audience find she has a realistic and well founded reason for being so. If Merida's grievances had been built up better, she would have likely been more sympathetic (and as she is, I do find her ultimately a sympathetic character)

Merida is the worst.

I guess people only like her because she's a tomboy? Because her personality is just bad.

Moana, with no doubt. Merida was whiny, annoying and frankly quite detestable. She's stuck in a bad position, but she's still unlikable nonetheless. At least Moana was more endearing and likable.

I liked Moana more because she wasn't a brat that was constantly at odds with her mom, whining, and obnoxiously showing off how independent she was by showing up the men. In fact, Moana actually was allowed to have flaws and live with them, whereas Merida only got humbled by her own shortcomings when things got really bad.

Moana is a much better character.

Moana was probably more likeable -- her goal is to save the world, and she does it in a selfless manner, and in the process helps others around her (notably Maui and her father) become more open minded and better people.

But Merida is definitely more *relatable*. She's a whiny teenager who talks back to her mom and complains about her life. And the main conflict is something we all can relate to. She has to fix her own screw up and admit to herself that she's been selfish. How many of us HAVEN'T been whiny teens who talked back to our moms and complained about our lives at one point or another, or had to admit that we've majorly screwed up? Also - say what you want about it, but those of us who frequently have bad hair days or have to spend an hour on curls can really relate to her unruly hair.
