This is good horror?

Oh hey hun why aren't you in bed? Oh couldn't sleep. I couldn't get this image of this demonic nun out of my head so I thought I'd paint it...

As you do.

I think he goes even as far as saying "I'm no picasso but it's not that bad!' Jesus. Wtf.

I couldn't stop laughing.

Seriously, I feel like James Wan got lucky with Saw. Everything else he's done is mediocre.

How is this a good film? I don't get it. I feel as though there is something wrong with me. I really miss horror. I wish I could recapture those moments of fear and curiousity I had as a teen discovering truly great horror films. I suppose I'm desensitised. But seriously, this film is terrible. It's just jump scares one after the other.

While I think the first Conjuring was a great horror film, you're right- this one was terrible and had a punishing 135min running time. Cliche after cliche, cringe-inducing dialogue.

The film was nothing shocking. they seem to smash The exorcist on one end and smash Amityville horror on the end and filling it with pure poltergeist meat. and dabbed it with a hint of "The Legend of Hell House" feel.

That scene was actually meant to be funny at least from the husbands perspective. If you want to say this isn't good horror I'll hear you out but that scene that got you to laugh did it's job.

There isn't, you just didn't like this movie. It happens.

I wish I could recapture those moments of fear and curiousity I had as a teen discovering truly great horror films

That would be kind of hard, as a teen these movies are more hm, immersive. Not really more believable but you get pulled into it a lot easier. As an adult you go into them knowing full well this "isn't real" and there logically is probably no way it could ever happen.

I suppose I'm desensitised.

Probably, but if you're a horror fan that's bound to happen at some point or another.

But seriously, this film is terrible. It's just jump scares one after the other.

While I respect your opinion I do disagree as I enjoyed it plenty. However I will admit this one was heavily reliant on jump scares once it got to the meat of the movie. The opening sequence in the Amitiville house was terrifying to me as she walked through the house. The basement not so much but that nun is creepy that's about it. The erie feel of her mimicking what happened that night though was tense.

Movies like Hellraiser (as an example) don't really exist anymore, but even as a child that was not scary to me. It was just weird and gross. As an adult I grew to love it. Regardless the movies got progressively worse, and from what I can recall they didn't really have too many jump scares they were just bad. Especially that last one, holy crap.

I digress. I can see why you wouldn't like the movie if it just doesn't fit in the mold of what you find entertaining. However like I stated earlier if you've been watching horror through your young life into adulthood yes you're probably desensitized.

You will likely sit in a horror movie and do the following

-Know what's going to happen.
-Be annoyed that it did happen.
-Wonder why these characters are always this stupid.
-Predict the jump scares.
-Possibly cheer on the bad guy
-and be left less than entertained.

That's if you're critical. I'm sure there are some where you go knowing it might be a little campy (like the original Evil Dead) and just enjoy the hell out of it.

This is good horror because it is based on a true story with real people. That is what makes it a horror movie. Not some made up SAW movie (which I also liked) but it makes this scary due to true stories and true to life people having to deal with demons and evil. Loved this movie because I am a Lorraine Warren and paranormal fan.

Lol true story. How old are you?10?

Can you prove it's not a true story? Read the news about it, the history of it, the witnesses. True story.

I see that you rated audition really highly and I would suggest that once you are exposed to Japanese horror you will probably not find much to scare you in western films. They tend to lack the tension and atmosphere of the Japanese films. Instead jump scares and action scenes or gore will be the order of the day. Desensitisation really does not help either as you can actually usually time the jump scares in western films so easily and once you have seen gore you have seen gore. Still you have to decide if you like western horror as this is sadly one of the better films, it might not scare you but you may still find some level of enjoyment from it.

To make a great film you need three things - the script, the script and the script -Alfred Hitchcock

"Saw" was a bad movie. That it introduced or codified new horror tropes doesn't excuse the horrible acting and writing.

"The Conjuring" and its sequel are infinitely better, with actual characters worth caring about and horror sequences that rely on suspense and peril rather than gorehounding.

I find Oscar Bait infinitely more interesting than ticket bait
