This is good horror?

Oh hey hun why aren't you in bed? Oh couldn't sleep. I couldn't get this image of this demonic nun out of my head so I thought I'd paint it...

As you do.

I think he goes even as far as saying "I'm no picasso but it's not that bad!' Jesus. Wtf.

I couldn't stop laughing.

Seriously, I feel like James Wan got lucky with Saw. Everything else he's done is mediocre.

How is this a good film? I don't get it. I feel as though there is something wrong with me. I really miss horror. I wish I could recapture those moments of fear and curiousity I had as a teen discovering truly great horror films. I suppose I'm desensitised. But seriously, this film is terrible. It's just jump scares one after the other.

reply

And yet you still can't resist seeing it.

You know there are other films.

reply

I pretty much watch whatever comes out that seems to get fairly good reviews.

Thanks.

Stop caring about reviews and just start going to see what looks good to yourself.

The first film got good reviews...I didn't like it.
This one got good reviews....I did like it!

Different strokes for different folks, which there's absolutely nothing wrong with. It'd be an extremely boring world if we all just agreed on everything and had the same preferences, enjoyments and opinions.

Yes of course. I'm a Lynch fanboy to some extent. But that's a very different genre to this I'd say.

reply

What is good horror to you?

reply

yeah LOL dialogue is mostly stupid in this one and please don't blame it on James Wan(brilliant genre director) it's not his fault,do you ever heard about person called "Writer" in movie industry OP? they create dialogues so in this case Chad and Carey Hayes are responsible for that *beep* we hear and like I said in a thread I created producers must replace them, but I think I'm the only one who cares about that like it seems....

reply

My point wasn't about the dialogue but the scene itself. What I wrote in the OP isn't exactly what is pronounced on film. I'm just trying to say that the scene was hilarious when it wasn't mean to be.

You can't just say it's the writer's fault and that is that. This is a team effort. I don't think James Wan just accepts what the writer has written and goes with it. He has to be comfortable too. It's all a collaborative effort. It's about being on the same page. Another example would be that an Architect doesn't just sit there waiting for the structural engineering to dictate the form of a building - it is instead a collaborative effort where they take each other's criticism and build the best building they can.

But yes, I do agree that there are instances when some directors don't have the capacity to understand if the screenplay is good or bad. Look at Ridley Scott(Alien and Blade Runner are two of my all time favourite films after 2001: A Space Odyssey) for example - brilliant visual director but sometimes his films are terrible and this may very well be because of the screenwriter or that something got lost within the writing / directing process.

Anyway, my point is that this has James Wan written all over it. This is his baby. James Wan is the creative lead in this production and he is mostly in charge of what we see on screen (minus studio bosses of course).

reply

I understand and I know that he was the leader here, but I'm sure that there is no director(no matter how influential and famous he or she is) in the movie industry who has the right to change everything he/she wants in the script,in this case those brother writers are mostly responsible for the ridiculous scenes (one of them mentioned by you) and dialogues...

Agree. This scene was so ridiculous I didn't bother with the rest of it.

reply

Yeah, this was part 2. Why'd you even bother?

You're like the idiot Star Wars fans who complain about how bad the prequels are, but can't stop watching the stupid things.

reply

Because I always hope that I will like it like the majority of the audience, given the really high rating? And go home satisfied? Isn't that what all movie audiences go to cinemas for?

reply

Nope. That's what sheep do. I hated Man of Steel, and didn't go see Batman V Superman. I'll do the same with Justice League etc... On the other hand, what I see from Suicide Squad tends to make me think of other movies I like, so I will go see it, even if it is a DC comics adaptation too. That's what you call having your own opinion and knowing what your tastes are. Maybe you haven't seen enough movies to know it yet.

reply

You Sir, are an idiot

reply

On the whole, I agree with you. After reading about the second part here http://putlocker.as/ I ran to the cinema to watch it and...got disappointed. Its like a fairytale. The first part was more interesting

I'm not going to write the obvious ones (Exorcist,Changeling,Rosemary's Child and so on) I will recommend other underrated supernatural horror movies from the last few years which I thought were better than Conjuring(both excellent actually) movies:Banshee Chapter,La Casa Muda,Dark Circles (2013),The Pact,Absentia,The Innkeepers,The Caller,The Road,Housebound,Last Shift,The Canal and The Taking of Deborah Logan

reply

I really thought the conjuring one was cringeworthy. It tried to hard to make the mother look at sound like reagen from the exorcist. It was just cheesy. Hopefully this second one is better.

Ive seen most of your suggestions. I thoigh the banshee chapter was excellent! Love HP lovecraft!

reply

Oh. And The Taking of Deborah Logan was excellent also. Much better than The Conjuring.
One of my favs is Noroi - the curse!
Another one similar to Deborah Logan was "the atticus institute" was pretty good!

Thanks for the suggestions though. Keep em coming!

reply

Looked at your "real" horror list and some of those movies arent even horror movies

reply

Such as?

reply

I agree.

What I find frustrating is that he is talented to some degree. I like how you have to watch the background all the time, because it's lit so creepily and you wonder if something will come out of it.

But Wan never goes there. He only goes for the jump screens. The silly looking demons or dolls. And references to all his favorite horror movies from the 70s and 80s that young audiences don't know.

I'm even afraid of going back to "Saw", because I'm sure it's nowhere near as good as I thought, when I first saw it in, what was it, 2004? I recently re-visited "Dead Silence", which I had given an 8/10, when I first saw it. God, what an idiot I was. It's not a great movie.

Still, I like Wan's movies okay. At least he likes the right movies and gets the atmosphere right. Not a lot, but sadly more than you usually get in the horror genre (which I love dearly).

Agreed with all. Insidious 1 for em was his best movie by far. I actually thought that was one of the best horrors to come out in a long time.

reply

You know, after watching Insidius 1 again, I have to agree with you. That was the scariest of the recent lot followed by conjuring 1. This is from someone who has seen pretty much every supernatural horror movie ever made.

reply

James Wan is a talent less hack, who does not have a single creative bone in his body. He has proved this by making the same cheesy movie over and over again just with a different name. He just pumps out lame mainstream crap, the type of 'horror' movies I would imagine Disney making.

reply

I donno about that. Whilst it is true that he does seem to churn out the same movies with diff names every year. Insidious 1 was a truely great horror film.. everythint else his done.. meh

reply

There are plenty of crap horror films out there. This is not one of them.

If you cannot enjoy this one then you may just have burned out on the genre. Hey, it happens.
