Perhaps a new alien threat forces the good (with their smarts) and the bad (with all their tech and resources) to have to come together to find a way to survive and overcome it and save the galaxy.

I'm all for this. They totally screwed the pooch with the sequel trilogy but i'm not against the character of Rey and aside from being a Palpatine, she still doesn't have a story arc after three films. And 15 years is long enough a time for her to become as godlike a Jedi as she pleases. This is an excellent opportunity for a do-over.

Of course Palpatine is coming back. Disney pretty much made it official with his return that he's Star Wars Satan and can never die. It won't ever be this cool, but imagine if they handled Rey and Sidious as Raven and Trigon (DC).
