We'll see if he can pull something together to avert the train wrecks that episode 9 is shaping up to be...but my money is on he'll pull a Luke and break camp or get fired because the task is too great...only time will tell...three months should be plenty.
Please... JJ was begged to do the first movie and I'm sure he was begged to do the next one. They should have just stuck with him the whole way through.
To be fair, the first film was a rehash of the new hope - which implies a major lack of creativity.
So, I don't think JJ is that great of a director/writer. But... going with someone even worse wasn't the best idea either.
It was a rehash but I like A New Hope so I did enjoy it, haha. I hope Rian is banned from helping write the next movie (sometimes they overlap) and JJ gets some serious help bringing this a close. After this though, I’m not in a rush to see another Star Wars movie, which I never thought I would ever say. 😕
I think you misunderstand my sentiment...for we seem share the same view. I too feel JJ should have continued. Not sure you feel that TFA was a great kicking off point for the new trilogy, but I did! I thought he introduced great new characters and was mostly respectful of the original core characters.
Unfortunately Rian has dismissed or full out eradicated most if not all that JJ put forth As a foundation. Now the question is...can he fix it? Will he even want to try as the writing on the wall becomes more evident? And the wotw is this...this saga could be on the precipice of a death spiral and although JJ is the only hope, many directors have exited Star Wars lately...could JJ be next? Let me finish by clearly stating this...I do hope he will stay, if for no other reason than that might indicate he has a plan that will undo the damage done by TLJ...only time will tell.
Yup we are the same page! JJ did the impossible with TFA I couldn't believe how well that turned out. Nobody believed it could be done and yet he pulled it off while at the same time making it a retro movie as Disney ask for.
I have full faith he will turn this around and bring a fulfilling end to this new trilogy he started. May need some help from Lawrence Kasden tho. Hopefully we can all look back and see TLJ as the weird star wars when it's all said and done.
I seriously doubt he will get fired or back out. JJ is far too professional for anything like that in my opinion. Kathleen and Spielberg both respect JJ and is probably always their first choice. I'm sure Kethleen came running to JJ after Colin couldn't put together a decent script for the 3 movie.
Hope you're right...unfortunately the Kazden well is pretty dry what with his emphatic declaration that solo is his last project. Also getting rid of Luke this early seems a bridge too far to me..but we'll see. As far as JJ professionalism...would have agreed prior to seeing how his ground work was handled...could not hold it against him if he took that a little personal and bailed. Let's just say...nothing can surprise me at this point.
Maybe J.J. will just hire Damon Lindelof and involve some time travel to negate Episode VIII altogether? Pull another Kelvin timeline? Hey, it worked with Star Trek. :D
I'm willing to bet Colin Trevorow had a dispute with Kathleen Kennedy about the Episode VIII script (he probably said Episode VIII was crap) and he was fired because of that, and not because his script was worse, since it can't possible be worse, even if it included dinosaurs instead of AT-ATs. :)
Maybe neither JJ, nor Rian should be allowed to return. They both fucked up. They mostly do what they're allowed to do it. So you should really look a bit higher - Kathleen Kennedy
Because of your post. You didnt like the movie, ok. You dont speak for everyone, and the trolls around here dont mean shit. For all their pissing and moaning about rey being a mary sue, they sure dropped their shit quick when luke is shown to be a flawed character and not the perfect jedi they jerked off thinking about.
It isnt what you wanted or expected. It has problems, and isnt the best in the series. But its not "the room" ffs.
Woa there buddy...pump the breaks. First...my post was very calm, rational and was certainly not meant to troll anyone...it just shined a light on a very real potential...that being many directors have found their way out of the current Star Wars films and with the backlash this film is experiencing JJs exit would not surprise me.
Second...I was not speaking for anyone including myself. I was merely posing a question that is relevant to this film and the subsequent sequel.
Third...never have used the term Mary Sue in regards to Rey! As a matter of fact she was one of my favorite new characters and was very excited to see the character JJ introduced us to getting fleshed out. It is my opinion this did not adequately take place...and no...I never gave a fuck as to her lineage, so that aspect of her role in TLJ is not a part of my complaints.
Fourth...since I never had a problem with Rey...does that mean I have your blessing to express my feeling about the handling of Lukes character? If so...allow me. I never expected Luke to survive the entire trilogy, but after carries untimely death I figured it would be insane to get rid of him in this installment. Likewise crazy would be to allow Leia to survive. Rian decided to double down on mental instability and do both...and fans are displeased...go figure. The problem is now multi-faceted.you either have no core characters or you have a Leia that is cobbled together using discarded footage and cgi. And even having no core characters would not be so bad if Rian would have utilized the episode he was allotted to flesh out the new characters, but that did not happen either. Rey is not trained and her extraordinary powers still unexplained,or worse are just not important enough to address. Poe is, I suppose, never going to evolve or have anything relevant to contribute to the series. Finn and Rose will hopefully elope and leave this mess behind them. And Kylo? Hipster neckbeard should fix all his inadequacy...
In summary...it wasn't what I, or millions of other expected. To say it has problems and that it isn't the best in the series is an understatement. And what the fuck is the Room?
Those are your preferences though, and not facts. Yes it would have made more sense to let leis die when she was sucked out into space and leave Luke sitting on his rock. But it didn’t happen.
What did happen was a story about hero’s failing. Luke failed to restart the Jedi. Luke failed to teach Ben to control his feelings. Luke himself failed to control his own feelings when he found out that Ben was dark as shit. Poe failed to understand that sometimes you have to think before you leap, costing countless lives not once but twice. How many times have we seen hero’s come up with silly plans that ultimately save the day? This showcased failure. It showed things don’t always goes the way you think they will. Luke even said those exact words in the movie. Then the movie ends with hope. Poe finally learns his lesson. Rey finally choices a side as does kylo. Luke sacrifices himself to become the legend everyone always thought he was so as to spark hope across the galaxy. It’s a starting point to push the series beyond just rehashing the ot. Luke will be back as a force ghost, ala kenobi. Perhaps we can expect a time jump to explain Leias off screen death as so far it’s been said that they won’t cgi Leia in to episode 9. Who knows?
And maybe don’t claim that a movie is a disaster because you didn’t like it, and people will be less likely to assume you’re trolling. Just a thought.
Nah. I thought this before, but now that this film is getting such mixed reactions from fans, they're going back to playing it safe and reliable. JJ to save the day. It isn't rare though for a big director to do all the setup for a film, then step aside and let somebody else actually do the grunt work.
That's who he is, that's what he does: Randomly take the stuff he grew up with and lazily rework it into "new" product.
He is the PERFECT usable tool for Kathleen Kennedy. She just wants the product to be made, turned out and sold. Abrams has zero problem with that, and will do exactly as he is told.
