"elevated horror" for normies

Don't be fooled by the trailers. This is disguised as elevated horror, but is really just another generic one filled with cliches, cheap jump scares, and a predictable story.

reply

I don't recall any jump scares

Certain details in the story were telegraphed to us, so there is predictability at times.

It's a horror movie that relies on atmosphere/vibe, great acting, and "what-you-don't-see" is scarier than "what-you-actually-see."

reply

There is literally one in the opening scene.

reply

the guy getting shot? not really a jumpscare.

reply

No when it cuts suddenly to Longlegs behind the girl.

reply

There were plenty of loud noises designed to make you jump. For example, when we see the first doll, the doll opens its eyes punctuated by a loud screech designed to make you jump lol

reply

its well made, but anyone who thinks its elevated is overpraising it

If anyone's interested, I reviewed the movie on my youtube channel. Appreciate any feedback. Trying to improve -

Great review CJR, you covered all of the bases and you kept it short and sweet, no over talking like some the reviewers. I’ve seen 15 min reviews for 90 min movies. WTH?!!

Keep posting up your reviews.

The movie works better if you say to the group you identified - like me - who loves anything Fincher (Se7en, Mindhunter). Both Harris novels Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon (Manhunter). Polanski’s Repulsion, even Ninth Gate. The Vanishing 1988. Audition. That this movie is NOT like these movies because you go in expecting something similar and what you get is a feeble ineffectual Clarice or Will Graham or Holden Ford or Bill Tench or Somerset. Nothing is scary. And there is no psychopath like Dolarhyde or Buffalo Bill or Lecter or John Doe, you get a ninny for about 10 minutes. There’s no policier in detection, and reason and professionalism are thrown out the window. One should compare this movie to Cure which I am sure you agree that this is the movie that is most like Longlegs. Why, because there is a transference of evil which no one can control. You can’t beat the devil. There really isn’t a serial killer; there’s a doll. And you said the last 10 years, these incidents have been going on for decades - at least 20 years. What I see in the “aesthetics” is something similar to Carrie. Piper Laurie and Witt are alike and so is the house and the religious overtones. Also, Capote’s In Cold Blood, actually Infamous about Capote in the aftermath of the murder of the Clutter family in that old stale house with pictures of Jesus on the walls where everything looks tobacco-stained. I also found Lee Harker’s name similar to Harper Lee and wonder if Perkins thought of the novelist and her relationship to Capote at all. Probably just a coincidence but the name really stands out. I expected Silence of the Lambs and was really disappointed when I saw this.

I agree with Shogun, I like your concise reviews.
Also, it seems that you watch a lot of movies and you are quite passionate about them so you should try and join our movie club sometime. Just look at the pinned thread and the general discussion board. Tonight we watch Bio-Dome and Special ID.

I haven't seen it yet but it looks just like Seven.

I thought it was very well made.

WTF is "elevated horror for normies"?

reply

Found it very atmospheric, not scary but suspenseful and surprising.

I was afraid that it is a hipster horror movie, like "The Lighthouse" or "Late Night with the Devil", but it was only tangentially hipster. The cinematography is superb and unsettling, and some actors did a great job. I liked how devoid of people the movie is, like a dream.

They dropped the ball at the end and ultimately you are right - unoriginal and unsatisfactory story. Mostly style over substance, but mesmerizing at times and I enjoyed it.
