Scariest movie that you've seen?

Ok, I liked this movie. It had some pretty creepy parts despite some bad acting/writing... but it got me to wondering, what do other people consider the scariest movie they've ever seen? I really want something SCARY..that'll keep you up at night... so tired of watching semi-scary movies that you forget as soon as the lights are out. Just looking for some good, recently made horror movies..like in the past 10-15 years... because I've seen a lot of old stuff and that stuff is great. Any recommendations?

Personally I dig Rosemary's Baby...The Exorcist... Halloween.....Texas Chainsaw Massacre... the stuff that has scared me the most unfortunately hasn't been straight horror movies (the T-1000 in Terminator 2, Predator, Alien, Martyrs...) so I'm kinda wondering where all the good, recent horror is at?

u need to see some asian horror... that´s how you get the scares of your life ;)

reply

Not really, outside of the ones everyone recommends, it's not easy to find a good asian horror movie, like with horror movies from any other country. It also depends if the person will find it scary at all.

I Am ZoZo-Anything to do with Ouija boards is very scary to me. I've never used one and don't plan to.

Witchboard

Paranormal Activity-I'm no longer afraid of this one, but the first time I saw it in theaters and the film was brand new with no sequels to take away from it's impact, I was absolutely terrified. I am a strong believer in the supernatural so I thought I would see a black cloaked figure in the darkness or something.

Race With the Devil-The idea that an entire cult of devil worshippers is willing to follow you to the end of the Earth in order to have you killed is a very creepy concept, especially when you have no idea just how many people are part of the cult (it could've spanned worldwide for all we know) or who is in it. You can't trust anyone.

Come, fly the teeth of the wind. Share my wings.

The scariest movie i've seen is definitely Paranormal Activity. The reason i've so scared is that, as a muslim, i believe in demons (we call them "djinn"). And scary stories about djinns are a part of the folklore around here. And i don't just mean urban legends. You can hear stories from first hand accounts, mind you. And i also was all alone at night, wearing headphones. It really scared the *beep* out of me.

I've also really enjoyed The Mist, Dead End, Martyrs, Severance and The Objective. Also, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake was pretty disturbing.

Seriously, why do ppl call gory movies scary? Its messy and entertaining.
But not scary!

And why do ppl call jumpscare movies scary? Its disturbing but entertaining.
But not scary!

Really scary movies, I mean SCARY movies, need really creepy and mysterious events plus a nice story that You cannot understand in the start. When You do not understand what You are encountering. Like japanese version of The Ring, Grudge, the 1st 45 minutes of Dark Skies and Sinister, thats when it's... SCARY!

reply

Because not everyone is scared of the same thing and not everyone thinks like you.

I agree gory is not scary. I don't know why seeing how gross one can get equals being scared.
Jump scares I don't mind so much.
The only movie that ever scared me after I went to bed for the night was The Blair Witch. And it had nothing to do with most of the movie itself, which I didn't think was scary, but the last scene in the basement when the guy was standing in the corner really freaked me out. I guess I was expecting him to turn around or something was going to happen. I guess my imagination was scarier than anything they would have showed.
It's hard to find a scary movie these days. Most are just gory or cheesy. The scariest ones are creepy and suspenseful. Wish they made more of those.

i have to agree with some others here that "Rosemary's Baby" is about the most non-scary movie ever made ... once you see Anton LeVay in a movie, the fat clown of american satanism, how can you be scared? he's a freakin joke as is his 'satanic church' ... and the movie just doesn't work aside from his presence ...

"The Exorcist" is still tops in my book ... remembering seeing it the first time with some high school buddies, one was so freaked he asked if we knew where he could get baptized that night lol ... he was a little freaked needless to say ... but that movie was so beyond the realm of horror for that time period especially that this wasn't an unusual reaction at all ... and still when i rewatch it about once a year in a pitch-dark room, it still creeps me out to the bone ...

"Halloween" -- another one that really upped the ante ... an amazing cinematic achievement on a low budget that works better than 99% of the high-budget horror films made ... 'you can't kill the boogie man' ... you got that right kid ... and the theatrical cut to me is still better than the director's cut that was released years later ... the director's cut includes some good info etc that was originally excluded but slows the pace of the film far too much ... the original cut is still the one to watch ...

most underrated? "Devil" (2010) -- I know everyone 'hates' M. Night now but he just does the story so calm down ... this is a movie to watch in a pitch black room ... outstanding use of darkness to bring in some real hard-core creeps and the storyline works as well ... would have been a great 'date movie' in that it might scare the girl enough to get closer to you ;) lol ...
