Scariest movie that you've seen?

Ok, I liked this movie. It had some pretty creepy parts despite some bad acting/writing... but it got me to wondering, what do other people consider the scariest movie they've ever seen? I really want something SCARY..that'll keep you up at night... so tired of watching semi-scary movies that you forget as soon as the lights are out. Just looking for some good, recently made horror movies..like in the past 10-15 years... because I've seen a lot of old stuff and that stuff is great. Any recommendations?

Personally I dig Rosemary's Baby...The Exorcist... Halloween.....Texas Chainsaw Massacre... the stuff that has scared me the most unfortunately hasn't been straight horror movies (the T-1000 in Terminator 2, Predator, Alien, Martyrs...) so I'm kinda wondering where all the good, recent horror is at?

Really liked this movie too. The scare and creep factor throughout was great. Other films of the scary type, the first Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch Project, that's really been about it. Didn't find Insidious or the Woman in Black scary or creepy. Great films that build up tension, but other than that, not really scary. Still need to watch the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Rosemary's Baby.

It's hard to find quality horror films that revolve around strange or supernatural occurrences, but I found V/H/S to be one of the best I had watched in a really long time.

really this *beep* is just unwatchable, its *beep* 2013 and people still cant film with a steady hand?!

not scary at all

Lots of "horror" movies aren't that "scary" now a days. Can't say (or type) the same for V/H/S. The first tape was scariest even though it seemed to be a knock off of the movie Succubus Hell-Bent.

I am a horror fan & to me true horror is not blood/gore/guts but creepy. The things that made many of the most famous horror/thriller so successful was their creepy, dark side.

Most people have seen enough axes into the skull, knife through the temple and innards cut out that they no longer scare or even shock. Those things might disgust or gross someone out but they won't keep you awake at night (especially by yourself).

Rarely these days do I find a movie that scares me in this manner. I want a movie that offers a compelling plot, characters and a dark (not literal although that might help), perhaps evil, almost spiritual aspect. To me evil in the best horror movies is a force that is driven by some darker, even more evil being. In the first Halloween Michael Myers was called 'the shape' and the Doctor who treated him referred to him as evil, almost devoid of any human characteristics.

In The Exorcist (I saw it when it first came out) the evil was spiritual and therefore was unlike anything that we had seen in movies up to that point. It was that the "monster", so to speak, was something we could not see or flee that made it scary.

Another older movie I loved was "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (the original). There was no Jason or other mindless guy chasing people. It was something from beyond our world that we had no idea how to fight. The deadness of the people once they had been 'replaced' was scary. To think that your husband/wife or parent(s) could be 'one of them' was and is very terrifying to me.

These types of films make us think beyond just "Run! he's after us!" garbage we see today. I don't want to die by an axe to the head but the thing that scares me at night when everything is quiet & dark is the other 'horror'...

I get a slight taste of iron and ink in the back of my mouth just writing this list. I've enjoyed the likes of Insidious and Grave Encounters and such because they look quite nice and at least even try to create an atmosphere. I do like to get frightened: it's an invigorating experience, unless the fear won't let you sleep for days, what happened to me after I saw the Ring in the theaters (after watching Battle Royale before going to the movies, so I was already in a vulnerable state).

this has been a fine thread, I've picked up at least six very interesting sounding horror flicks I've not yet seen. Thank you all who have answered!

I read through this entire 8-page thread wondering if anyone would mention "The Innkeepers (2011)." There's a lot of hate for it, but I thought it was one of those great atmospheric movies. Some lame jump scares too, but they didn't ruin the atmosphere for me.

the ONE AND ONLY film which has ever scared me to the point of struggling to fall asleep is " the fourth kind " (2009)
I haven't rewatched it so it might have been because of my mood at the time or just because I had been watching many alien documentaries around that time.

But if anyone wants to give that one a try then I would defo recommend it, I was honestly scared like never before and I have seen my fare share of horrors.. (check my profile if you need a list)

otherwise heres a few films which surprised me greatly which I still consider thriller/horror but were very compelling.

Dead Ringers (1988)
The Jacket (2005)
Pathology (2008)

One word - Antichrist. Very disturbing, even after one year.

Why would anyone get scared by "aliens"? It's not real. Truth be told, there's no "aliens" out there trying to "take over" the earth. Gosh.

I'm not sure how scary they'll be for other people as it usually all depends on that persons own fears but for myself Rec 1 & 2 I thought were not only scary and tense but also just brilliantly made films. Definitely two of my favourite horror movies. The Orphanage is also one of my favourites, it's creepy and suspenseful but actually has a really good storyline to it and is actually really sad. Sinister freaked me out a lot I definitely had a bit of trouble sleeping that night. Misery scares me because it's the kind of thing that probably could happen. I also thought The Conjuring was good.

Some films don't properly scare me I just find them quite disturbing. A few examples being Funny Games, Saw (although the rest are a bit *beep* I still think the first Saw film is a masterpiece) and The Human Centipede (the idea of it disturbed me more than the actual movie).

There are also some films I find quite disturbing that aren't even horror films but again these things are all to do with peoples personal opinions, fears and weak points I guess.
