Don't get me wrong, I love the Coens. I've seen almost all of their movies and I like most of them. Even the less good ones are still 6/10 in my book. But I don't understand why this one is praised so much. High user rating and extremely high critics rating. I'd give it a 5/10.
Of course it's not bad in any sense. Coens can't do a honestly bad movie. The dialogues, the characters are O.K., good acting, nicely filmed etc., etc., I just don't know what to enjoy in this one. Little of Coen's black humour, little of funny situations, no tension, and the story is uninteresting.
"Why no one admits that?" --> this question wasn't meant for everybody. I'm sure half of the praisers are actually enjoyed it for whatever reason, but I'm also sure there's another half who didn't and acts like they did because it's the Coens and they look smarter enjoying an "art" movie.
*EDIT 2015.12.26.: English is not my first language. Incorrect word "noone" was fixed. It confused some people who didn't understand the point, and kept pointing it out for almost two years.
I'm reminded of an advertising adage.. If something is too dumb to say...sing it.. This film is so boring it goes beyond boring and becomes amazing..and unique.. Keep watching it if you appreciate the Coen brothers...
You don't like it. Fine. To each their own. However, to state that it is definitively boring is idiotic. I, for one, have seen the film three times and haven't been bored for one second of those (approximately) five and a half hours.
No I love this film.... I can see how easy it is to miss it's charm... I can see how the Coens have allowed the theme of missing major opportunities as a flawed young man to take over the whole film to the point that the film itself makes the same mistakes.....only it's not a mistake. There's a reason it flopped more than just about anything they've done... That's what it's about... I admit to be totally out of my depth with all things Coen.. I said to someone about about a man about to embark on his first Big Lebowski. He said...We'll see what he thinks of it.... I said no ....We'll see what it thinks of him... God bless the Coens..
I still haven't been able to watch it all the way through. I've tried three different times- fell asleep all three times. I'm not going to give it another chance any time soon. Definitely a snoozer though.
I watched this film for the very first time just last evening on DVD and, while I thought it was generally a decent movie, I was slightly disappointed with it to a certain extent; I'm a tad ambivalent about some aspects of the movie, namely the many seemingly "fleeting" characters and their consequent lack of development. I appreciate that this film's main focus is a singular entity and his choices/decisions and paths in life, but, imo, this potentially could have been a classic had there been more cohesion, expansion and development of some of the film's other many characters, instead of mystery, ambiguity and symbolism; the film was a jumbled, erratic, desultory mess in places (even though it is a relatively short movie, it still lacks cohesion in patches), imo. I felt it had a lot more to offer and should've been a 3-hour/4-hour opus. I was genuinely frustrated when it ended, thinking of what could have been; it seemed to me annoyingly abrupt and equivocal. Oh well. Any thoughts on what I've said here?
Verdict: 7.5/10
Incidentally, while I'm not an expert on the technical aspects of film-making, I thought that the cinematography and editing in this movie were very good, as were the acting and score.
I thought this was a great movie. I have already seen it three times and plan on purchasing it for my dvd collection. I tend to like characters study type movies that move at a regular pace. No Country for Old Men moved at the same pace but it just had more violence in it. The people who're saying this movie is boring are probably caught up in the instant gratification movies with explosions, gunfire, and car chases.
Inside Llewyn Davis is a movie that's changed my life. Here I am a black guy trying to go back and listen to the old folk songs from way back in the day. But this movie was about more than just the music (which was brilliant in its own right), but it was well acted, dark, and captured the pulse of what life is like for aspiring folk singers. There was also a lot of the subtle humor the Coen brothers are known for.
The people who don't like Inside Llewyn Davis should stick to watching the Fast and Furious (not that there's anything wrong with those kind of movies).
I watched the film today and I quite enjoyed it, also, while it was 'boring' I found it to be rather entertaining but it really never made any progress between the beginning to the end.
One great thing that the movie wowed me was when the main actor of the film looked like a young Billy Bob Thornton (it's hard to say where exactly since I didn't take note of its timeline).
You've confused 'It was boring' with 'I was bored'...
The problem wasn't in the film, it's in you. I loved it and if anything it was over too soon. Maybe you never tried to make something beautiful for years and years before realising that you suck and wasted all that time... I wanted to slap him and hug him all through the movie.
