It was boring. Why no one* admits that?

Don't get me wrong, I love the Coens. I've seen almost all of their movies and I like most of them. Even the less good ones are still 6/10 in my book. But I don't understand why this one is praised so much. High user rating and extremely high critics rating. I'd give it a 5/10.

Of course it's not bad in any sense. Coens can't do a honestly bad movie. The dialogues, the characters are O.K., good acting, nicely filmed etc., etc., I just don't know what to enjoy in this one. Little of Coen's black humour, little of funny situations, no tension, and the story is uninteresting.

"Why no one admits that?" --> this question wasn't meant for everybody. I'm sure half of the praisers are actually enjoyed it for whatever reason, but I'm also sure there's another half who didn't and acts like they did because it's the Coens and they look smarter enjoying an "art" movie.

*EDIT 2015.12.26.: English is not my first language. Incorrect word "noone" was fixed. It confused some people who didn't understand the point, and kept pointing it out for almost two years.

I LOVE the Coen brothers and rank some of their films as the best. But, this one really missed the mark.. This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen (and I mean that. .. like top 3 worst movies). It's almost as if they TRIED to make THE worst movie. Zero character development. ZERO plot. Absolutely nothing interesting at all. I get character pieces. The movie, Tape, is one of my favorites. That entire movie took place in a hotel room. Or, Glengary Glen Ross, again 90% of that was in an office. There's Gravity and a ton of other "mood" pieces that are brilliantly executed. ILD was not one of them. There are too many bad things to mention in a single review. The cat, for instance, was like freshman film school symbolism for God even knows what (or CARES what!). This movie is the "folk music" of movies: boring chords, boring tune and filled with so much self indulgence that the only people who could possibly care about it are the people that wrote it.

Who's Noone, again?

I do. I found it boring. The songs were dull and went on forever.
I love the Coens and have watched all their movies: I had high hopes for this one but the movie is nowhere near their masterpieces.
Still a pretty good film though.

I agree...it was boring...and highly over-rated. The Coen brother fans are like the Woody Allen fans...they will rate the movie high regardless of it's real value. I like some of the Coen brothers movies, but not this one. I rated it 6 out of 10 and feel that I may have been overly-generous.

This was a movie about some musician in the 60's. He was depressed all the time, and he was a total jerk to everyone around him, even when they tried to help him.

The end.

No really, that's it.

Oh, and there were like 3-4 folk tunes mixed in.

Wow, just amazing !

No really, that's it.

Wrong film.

I admit that it was boring (at least in my opinion).

I can see why certain people wouldn't embrace this film because admittedly, hardly anything really happens. But this isn't a typical 3-act film. It's a moody piece that is simply taking a look at a musician who just can't get a break. We never even see him get one. It's purely a character study, and that can be a style that divides audiences. I personally loved it, but I have certain friends that I likely wouldn't recommend it to based on their movie tastes, though I wouldn't discourage them watching it either. I understand if you don't like it, because it's not for everyone. I thought it was great.

I also adore the Coens, but my reaction was the exact opposite. I saw it once, almost two months ago, and I can't stop thinking about it. And I can't wait to watch it again.

reply

So agree, Fizzy Gillespie. Just watched it and am looking forward to second viewing. I thought it was quite the interesting ride and loved that it was 100% subjective from LD's point of view.

I slept with you and you're in love with my husband. What the hell am I supposed to do with that?

reply

It was slow and it was boring but yet I have no ill feeling towards this film and The Coen Brothers. I suspect a second viewing will be required to appreciate it.

It was boring. Why no one admits that?

Because it was not.
