Pretty awful. I blame The Hangover, which, though funny, pushed the envelope, as they say, made comedies filmed in its wake have to outdo it. This happens every few years in the movies. American Pie made pie coitus all the rage. Many years ago, Animal House, also pretty good, caused a large wave of sophomoric movies. The Exorcist, Jaws, Smokey and the Bandit, and so on had similar effects. Why? Because in general the movie viewing public has little or no imagination. Rather than be challenged, we want to see the same things, the same jokes and the same thrills over and over, just as a small child wants to read the same picture book over and over, every night.
So yes, the comedy here is crude and unimaginative and, worst of all, not funny. Jason Bateman has done more and better work in any one minute of Arrested Development, and much the same is true of the other principals. Why would he or Ryan Reynolds agree to appear in such tripe? Beats me. The studio suits probably made the roles hard to turn down. The studio suits have just about insured that about 90 per cent of what is made today in the US is crap of this sort. The studio suits have no imagination, and they assume the same is true of us. Greed has ruined US film, just as it has ruined so many other things. So, for every Hangover, which is genuinely fresh and funny, we get twenty-five knock offs that try but fail to duplicate its humor.
