Is it possible for a helicopter to lift an old, old wooden ship?

I understand about suspension of disbelief, but during that whole sequence, I was a bit taken out of the scene, because I kept thinking that it was impossible. Is it possible? I hope it is possible.

Otherwise, I was very immersed in the movie and really enjoyed it!

A S-64 Skycrane can lift 10 tons, a small wood building. Those ships are much heavier.

reply

I had a feeling it couldn't be done. Why did they have to pick a stunt which has such an incredible premise?

reply

Ships would be at most minimum 80 tons to 150 tons.

reply

Not just the ships but 4-6 billion worth of gold, right?

A ton of gold is worth just over $48 million or so. You'd have to have TONS of gold on board.

reply

Around 100 tons of gold. So there is no way that helicopter (or any helicopter) can lift all that gold, not to mention the ship is also at least few hundred tons.

reply

According to wikipedia the Magellan ship that Broke down in Moluccas weighted around 110 tons.

I personally wouldn't trust ANY of the physics you see in this movie. At all.

reply

True. Like the video game, it's a 'cartoon' of sorts, so I don't expect anything resembling reality, but for some reason this sequence lacked immersion for me because I couldn't buy it even for a moment.

reply

Sounds like a thing for MythBusters.

reply

Great idea!

reply

I miss them.

reply

And they would lift it with duct tape!

reply

"Feminism" is an "old wooden ship", per Ron Burgandy.

reply

I believe that Diversity was an old, old wooden ship. But I dig that you got the reference. :)

reply

In movies anything is possible. Just go with it.

reply

Aw, you're so right! I can't believe I messed that up haha.

reply

I just saw the trailer, but doesn't it show the lead leaping along crates that are falling out of the back of a plane? No way that's possible. This movie appears to follow the physics of Looney Tunes.

Compared to the other things that happen in this film, the helicopters lifting the ships is the most believable moment.

reply

Helicopters get overweight if you put too many people in them. They can barely haul Humvees around and they can't fly for beans while doing it.

reply

They used the choppers from the "Pacific Rim" universe.

reply

Glad it's not just me who was suspicious about, what, 8 helicopters airlifting a 30-storey robot.

reply

8 helipcoters could theoretically lift around 160 tons.
