Why does Furiosa have no armpit hair?

In a world without water and food, she is a warrior, why bother to shave her armpits?

Fury Road is a great movie, but this keeps bothering me...

reply

Me too!

Because Charlize Theron bends the knee to The Patriarchy.

reply

That is the weirdest part: a movie about feminism, yet the main character bend to patriarchy to shave her armpits.

reply

Probably lice or whatever being a big problem.

reply

Joe’s mistresses didn’t have any either

I think Furiosia was a general of stature. She had access to amenities

The regular folk (the people who held their cups up to catch water in the citadel) probably had armpit hair

reply

The problem wasn't whether she had access to amenities or not, the problem was she was a worrier, why bother to shave her armpit?

The best movie adaption I ever read was Alien 3. Which actually explained a number of bat shit crazy decisions in that trainwreck of a movie. One of em was why they shaved their bodies. Out of control lice and other bitey insects. Space lice! Who knows what the hell was going in the apocalypse. Always remember: the old school bigwigs were called that because THEY WORE WIGS with shaved heads. Because of the bugs.

reply

If bugs were the reason, why war boys didn't shave their armpits?

Many others have made good points on here how it can be justified in-universe, so go with any of those as you please.

But, mainly because it's a movie, and most movies, including this one, are made primarily for the male gaze, and so that's just something we're supposed to conveniently overlook. And most men don't like armpit hair on their women. In fact, women shaving their underarms became popular after going sleeveless became fashionable, and precisely because of it. Because suddenly their pit hair was all the time readily visible to men, who decided it wasn't attractive on women, and so women starting shaving them. Pit hair is now seen as primarily masculine. That's why when we see a man with shaved pits we wonder why, and when we see a woman without shaved pits we wonder why not.

This is evidenced by the multiple guys on here who have said things like "we don't go to the movies to see women with pit hair!" and so on. Which, may be patriarchal, but it's also general fact/preference. Of course women have the right to not shave anywhere if they don't want, and they don't have to live for being attractive to men, but men also get to like what they like.

None of their answers made sense. The problem with Fury Road was the movie was about feminism: a woman tries to bring down the patriarchy. Yet the woman bent to patriarchy to shave her armpits. It's a contradiction to the character.

reply

Because she's butch...but not THAT butch.

This implies that the character is a heterosexual.
