Say what you will about her appropriateness for the role of a male transvestite, there are very few actors whose faces can match the expressiveness of Tim Curry. I'm quite impressed; she obviously loved every minute of her performance.
I disagree fairly strongly. A lot of her lines were delivered flat and she never came close to the intensity that Curry showed. Whether it was the direction or acting, the character was extremely forgettable for me. I thought Victoria Justice as Janet and Ryan McCartan as Brad were the best parts of the movie. Christina Milian as Magenta was also decent but I wasn't a fan of any other characters.
There was no comparing her to Tim Curry. She did not match him at all. Tim Curry didn't play mealy mouthed Diva Wanna Be, he played aggressive male transvestite who was manipulative and evil.
I like Cox and I'm sure she gave her all. I have not seen it yet and not sure I'm going to bother.
The problem is that this is the re-make...for better or worse...of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Sure, it will live on on stage, but as far as anyone ever doing another major production for television or film, highly doubtful.
I'm glad Cox looked like she was having a good time. Good for her. Not so good for us.
If you really care about RHPS, don't see it. I walked away saddened that one of my most beloved films was pushed through a corporate filter and rendered into this. Everyone looked as if they worked really hard on this, so it doesn't bring me pleasure to say that that reboot brought me no pleasure.
As for Cox herself, she obviously worked tremendously hard and her face is deliciously expressive. Her singing was more than fine and her dancing was passable. I felt that she fell short, but as practically everyone above has said, almost no one can come close to Curry.
I actually think that she positioned herself well to have a great role in her future. A really galvanic role, like a Mama Rose, Auntie Mame, Hedwig, or Evita. I don't know if it'll be in a new piece that someone writes for her talents expressly, or in some amazing revival of a classic.
Sadly, THIS role was not the role that will catapult her into the heights of a Rosalind Russell, Bernadette Peters, etc. But I do feel that she has the personal magnetism, talent and audacity to find her role. I mean, say what you will about the final product, it took a heck of a lot of guts to EVER put on Frank's pearls (not that they gave her pearls in this one).
Bleh.... the insanity wasn't there.... Actually there was very little there beyond 'look how fabulous I am'
Even the 'I'm Going Home' song, which is supposed to be sad (Remember Tim Curry had his mascara running down his face)...She kept on her giant cartoon smile the entire time.
They skipped pathos and went for pathetic in that number.
In the original, Frank's tattered and wet costume, hair and runny makeup emphasized a forlorn and desperate hope.
In the remake, despite having just been in a swimming pool, Frank is completely dry with a perfect costume and hair. They also took the punch out of the blue skies line by projecting the sky onto the curtain before the song started.
"I see, blue skies!" *bamf* BLUE SKIES!
The remake came across like a college stage production that needed a few more complete rehearsals.
Overall this remake wasn't terrible as I was expecting it to be, they didn't really screw up, it just felt flat and somewhat unambitious. The source material is so strong - and still packs a mighty punch, in terms of relevance, today - that is really hard to ruin.
doesn't matter to me that Laverne is transgender....I had a hard time understanding some of the words she was saying/singing..I just wonder if I was the only one...several times I had to ask my daughter to repeat when I couldn't understand what was said/sang
I'm not a native English speaker and, even though I don't use subtitles, I didn't had a problem understanding her (or anyone else). Although, it's also true that RHPS's dialogues are so effective, straightforward and often times iconic that, even though I don't know every single line by heart, I kind of "remembered" as they went along, so there's that.
In any case, I like what she did with the character: she stayed true to the material and, while is true what someone else said, that she lacks the darker, more dangerous edge Tim Curry had, I felt she find a way to do her own thing with Frank.
