But SNW isn't woke!!! We swear! NuDrekkies have confirmed its not!!! And in related news, Queen Elizabeth II definitely isn't a monarchist!

reply

How can he/she be non-binary without a pronoun though?

Wikipedia: Keitel is non-binary and uses she/her pronouns.

reply

And here we go. We've been worried that SNW would pull a bait and switch. I don't care if an actor is trans or gay as long as that isn't their whole character. Leave that nonsense on Discovery. Write characters that are individuals, not walking identity placeholders. Sadly, with Kurtzman still running the show this is to be expected. I sincerely hope this isn't a Grey 2.0 style, entirely hollow, excuse to show off wokeness for wokeness' sake.

reply

Oh thank God, even more Democrat Party activism in "Scum Drek: Lame Newb Turds." And no, Star Trek was NOT "always dat way."

reply

Wow i was semi-enjoying this show.

reply

Told ja the wokeness would eventually come in. It was only a matter of time.

reply

It wasn't in a annoying way.

And there was no emphasis on the transgenderism.

Although that conversation about "who you really are" was a subtle hint still it was subtle enough to not be preachy and abused.

I felt that this episode had a lot of problems, but wokeism wasn't one of them.

reply

It kind of felt like at any moment there would be a "message" about being trans, but luckily it never came and it ended up giving us one of the all time great campy villains. There are times in this show where it seems as though they're walking this tightrope, like at any moment they're going to fall into Discovery nonsense. Luckily, so far at least, they have managed to avoid that and deliver mostly fun very trekky episodes. I still don't trust Kurtzman, and as a result the back of my mind keeps nagging with "it's coming." Anyone else feeling that slight bit of anxiety watching the show, moments where it seems like they're about to give in and hit us with it?

reply

Oh, there were at least two messages, but they were very nice and quite well "packed" and "hidden" under the "what does it mean to be human or vulkan or half human half vulkan" and "find who you truly are" but while I "heard" the trans message between the lines it was ... well, well done and quite subtle. If I wouldn't had been on the hunt for this kind of wokenism I might not have even noticed ...

reply

Yes the "who we really are" is subtle but it could also be interpreted as it is not the categories we are put, for Spock Vulcan/Human and for people it would be Gender, Sexual Orientation, Race, Ethnicity but the "who we really are" statement says (to me at least) that we are the combination of all of our opinions, thoughts and ideas. The group that you are put in is a part of who you are but there are many other variables that are just as important if not more so.

reply

Not sure what's your point because my post should have covered that.

Yes, that was the message but it can be considered a subtle message pro trans, gender Identity, etc. But that's ONLY because the character was trans and we were expecting that. But it's wasn't that overt and didn't bother me. I was like "Aha, here it is, what I was expecting the whole episode. Huh, that's all? Ok, it's ok".

reply

She's a good actor, and there will certainly be transgender people in the future, so it didn't derail the story with political posturing.

reply

Spoiler: I like that this character turned out to be a villain. Left room for more appearances.

reply

It's almost like you people haven't seen anything Star Trek has done since the 1960s. Roddenberry idealized a Socialist utopia that strived for acceptance of all people regardless of their species/gender/etc. God forbid these new shows continue that message.

reply

Ah, the tired ol' "Star Trek was ALWAYS woke!" argument.

I think the reverse is true. The people making that claim evidentially haven't seen much Star Trek. If they did, they'd realize that the episode with the "first interracial kiss in television history" had nothing to do with interracial relationships, and Kirk and Uhura didn't even WANT to kiss in that episode but were basically FORCED to. They'd also be dismayed to discover that straight white males are "in charge" about 95% of the time in TOS.

Real Star Trek was quite different from their revisionist history version of it.

reply

So you're discounting the first interracial tv kiss because of the story, and say men are always in power even though plenty of episodes have had females completely in power. Some of the best TOS or TNG deal with understanding be cultures and the value of testing everyone fairly, regardless of their race, gender, etc.

But you're right, Star Trek was never "woke".
