Furiosa is a Mary Sue, sorry.

Heard few of the early reviews where they seemed to let out sighs of relief because Furiosa character "is not a Mary Sue". But of course she is. She is beyond resourceful. She is a master mechanic, able to constuct a diesel-punk bionic arm prostetic with the one remaining good arm, an impecable marsman, tinkerer, combatant - just everything.

I haven't seen this yet, but it sounds like Max is cooler than ever. By deepening the lore of all this nonsense, he really is a fly in the ointment who rolls in and just straight cripples an empire cause they f'd with the wrong dude. They been building this mad society of theirs for decades, producing wamen like Furiosa who has this life dream but it's not till Max comes around that the walls fall.

reply

Yep. It’s Max that convinces Furiosa and the rest to go back to take the Citadel which leads to the death of Immortan Joe, even if Max isn’t the one to kill him. He also transfuses his blood to Furiosa at the end of Fury Road, saving her life.

Max is the catalyst that destroys Immortan Joe’s entire empire.

John Wick is the biggest Mary Sue, yet people love John Wick.

reply

Wick went through training and gained experience to get to his level of abilities before the first movie started. He was even retired.

He didn’t start off perfect the first day he picked up a gun.

reply

No, the four movies never mention his past, we don't know his training, and we don't know was he that good at the start. I dare you to pick a scene that mentions he was not a perfect hitman from the beginning.

reply

He’s considered the best assassin in the world. Its implied he earned that designation.

No one thinks he woke up one day, picked up a gun and became the perfect assassin.

No one. And you’re the only one who thinks he’s a Mary Sue.

It also helps that John Wick was played by the lead from high octane action flicks Point Break, Speed, and The Matrix trilogy

Bit like having Clint as Dirty Harry post Dollars trilogy, Arnold in Predator post Terminator/Commando, Stallone in Cobra post Rambo etc

Female bad ass 'mary sue's like ATJ Furiosa and Rey in SW are played by totally new actresses or no prior action experience .. whereas Charlize had done several action movies prior to Fury Road (I don't think she was ever labelled 'Mary sue' at the time)
