Yes I think we should go back to weekly viewing. I think a combination of weekly releases along with the whole season coming out just ahead of the next season is a good compromise. That way, people who like to watch weekly can do that, and people who prefer to binge things can do that too.
Also, although I like the tightness of plotting with 8 to 13-episode seasons, I think it contributes to the problem you describe. Even if I spend a whole 8 or 13 weeks watching a show, one week at a time, I've completely forgotten what happened by the time the next season is released.
I don't mind having some shows that are plotted in a really careful way, like Breaking Bad. But other shows, you just like the characters and want to hang out with them on an approximately weekly basis. It's like going out for a fancy dinner vs ordering in a pizza. The fancy dinner is way better, perhaps even memorable. But you can't go out for a fancy dinner but once every few months. On the other hand, you can order pizza whenever you want. It won't break your wallet, you don't have to dress up, and it's only a delivery driver away.
